As we know well, DJing as part of a duo requires a special connection. Being in the booth, performing in front of a crowd, trying to create a musical flow: To do this effectively, there needs to be a profound understanding and link between the two artists. It’s a connection that can be born from long road trips to far-flung locations or extended hours in a dark studio. Or it can be a connection that comes from something deeper. In our case, that’s love and marriage — and in the case of Vanjee and Nadav Vee, brotherhood.

This Friday, May 16, we’re bringing back a night that’s very meaningful for us — Sleepy & Boo + Friends — to Marquee. For this edition, we’re welcoming the two Isareli-born, New York-based brothers to the booth as our guests. Both play most of their gigs separately as solo DJs, but this Friday, they’ll be playing back-to-back, the first time they’ve shared their DJing duties at Marquee New York. We took a minute to catch up with them find out about their roots as DJs, and how they work best together behind the decks. Every Friday at Marquee is dedicated to underground music, forward-thinking artists and good vibes, and we’re continuing that this week.

Hey guys, how are you both doing? Where are you at?

Nadav Vee: Doing great guys! We are in NYC enjoying the great weather… finally! We’re looking forward to a great summer with a lot going on here in NYC and abroad.

You are brothers who both DJ, and both play underground music. How did you guys get to this point where you both have very similar interests?

Nadav Vee: We’ve been record shopping together since a young age while growing up in Tel Aviv and continue to do so here in NYC. We also lived together when we moved to NYC so a lot of our interests have aligned naturally.
Vanjee: From an early age, we grew together in the same underground scene and we lived together for a few years. And here we are playing similar music.

Musically, what would you say your differences are as DJs? How do you approach a B2B set instead of when you play solo?

Nadav Vee:Well, first off, I’m taller… But really, for me it’s hard to say where we are different because we followed the same path. We both went through many genres of music, from disco, soul, funk, R&B and hip-hop, to the origin of house music, some commercial and mainstream stuff along the way, and to the music we play today.

I take more time to prep for a gig with Vanjee, and when we have a B2B set, we think about the venue and the crowd first, and then we count to three and we both say which direction we want to go in — and usually it is the same.

Vanjee: A back-to-back set is a totally different approach for me. I love to create a journey when I play solo, but when we play back-to-back, we feed off each other and create a story that neither of us could tell without the other.

You are both from Israel but you have lived in New York for a while. Was DJing something you picked up in Israel, or here in the city? What was your first exposure to this music?

Nadav Vee: We definitely picked it up in Israel and evolved in NYC through the years. Vanjee started when he was 13. For me, it took a bit longer before I caught the bug.
Vanjee: Well, I was lucky enough to walk into a club and make friends with the owners when I was very young. The nightclub environment appealed to me right away and right there, a voice inside my head told me that this is what I want to do. Yes, I was 13 back then.
Nadav Vee: Yes and he took me off of my computer when I was 15. I joined him at his gigs back then and I think it was a year later that I took over a gig that Vanjee had moved on from. It stayed in the family! 😉

Both of you guys have played separately at Marquee before, but this is the first time you’re playing there together. What are you most looking forward to this Friday at Sleepy & Boo + Friends when you’re both on the decks?

Vanjee: Fridays at Marquee have become the place to be in NYC, especially with the evolution of underground music to the main stage. That recognition means a lot to us! We are very excited for this coming Friday, and I’m absolutely sure that this is going to be an unforgettable party, so don’t miss out. I’m looking forward to rocking the decks again, this time with my brother!
Nadav Vee: ENERGY ON THE DANCE FLOOR! That’s the most important thing. That’s what I’m looking forward to most. I can’t wait for those people in the crowd to give us the spark in the booth (you know who you are!) — the ones that charge up the dancefloor and help bring it to life.

Tell us about some of the stuff you’re working on musically. Do you have any releases coming up? Anything you’re working on together?

Vanjee: We have some productions in the works, some individually and some with other artists and labels. We will give you a little taste of some of our upcoming stuff on Friday night! I’ve recently released “So Excited” with DJ T. on Get Physical and have others I feel really good about on the way.
Nadav Vee: We are putting in quite some time in the studio, individually as well as with different artists and of course, together. Stay tuned!

Outside of New York, what are some recent DJ adventures you guys have had?

Nadav Vee: Morocco, Marrakech, WOW, that was an adventure… a cab driver took me and a friend deep inside the market, and managed to sell us a carpet and some spices. Go figure! I played a couple gigs there, one in Marrakech and another in Casablanca. I had really great hosts and can’t wait to go back soon!
Vanjee: Miami has been a great “home away from home” for me. Especially my “marathon” sets at the terrace of Club Space.. Miami has been a GREAT adventure and I’m really looking forward to have a back to back Sunday morning set there with my brother soon.

For the last two years, Basic’s Sleepy & Boo have been holding down the decks at Cielo every month on the second Friday of the month. Their Sleepy & Boo + Friends bash features the resident duo dropping a headlining set of underground gems new and old, alongside a rotating roster of their own local guests. It’s a night dedicated to New York’s homegrown Big Apple beats, going down at one of NYC’s top nightlife spots for electronic music and culture.

But for their second anniversary bash on Friday June 8th, they’re mixing things up a little bit – and welcoming as a special guest the one and only Dutchman extraordinaire Joris Voorn. For years, Joris’ productions and remixes have been favorites with legions of DJs across the board – with his meticulously produced tracks featuring a perfect fusion of infectious dancefloor grooves and just enough melody and emotion to set his music apart from the pack. He’s released hit after hit, and is set to kick off a huge summer of events and music. He’s just mixed Disc 1 of Sven Vath’s annual Cocoon Ibiza summer preview, his own Rejected label is firing on all cylinders, and his latest “Dusty House” EP is tearing up the charts worldwide.  He’ll be playing the extended headlining set at Cielo along with Sleepy & Boo, fresh off a daytime appearance at Dekalb Market in Brooklyn.

Sleepy & Boo spoke with Joris in advance of the party, where he discussed his new Cocoon CD, how he approaches his music production, and some of his favorite things about New York and playing at Cielo. We’ll see him on Friday, June 8th, for the Sleepy & Boo + Friends two-year anniversary!

Greetings Joris! Hope everything is going well? You just got back from playing at the Movement Festival in Detroit this past weekend. How was your set, and what were some of the other highlights of the festival for you?

DEMF was amazing as always. It’s by far my favorite US festival (not that I’ve been to that many). It’s a place where people understand music, you don’t have to think OMG what am I going to play next, it’s all just a natural flow. The location is also just perfect, in the heart of the city, at the water next to the GM tower, and the weather is always great. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to check out many other artists as I came in only for the last evening, but on the same Beatport stage I saw the amazing Martinez Brothers and after us Steve Bug doing a great set. I also saw a bit of Detroit heavyweight Stacey Pullen, playing a great contemporary techno set.

You’ve played at a few of the big US and North American music festivals in recent years. What are your thoughts on what’s going on with the “EDM” scene here in the US right now?

The EDM scene in the US is very mainstream and commercial compared to Europe. There’s still a long road to go before you’ll see the same interest in more underground variations of EDM in the US. However, there’s a few places where great things happen, and where die hard fans of the music gather and make sure they have a great party. The  appreciation and support from US fans is very high, hopefully they’ll be able to convert more people to slightly less ‘easy listening’ EDM in the near future.

Summer is here and you’ve just mixed the annual Cocoon summer preview CD (along with Cassy). How did you approach your mix, and what tools did you use to put it together?

As it’s a promotional CD to set the mood and groove for the Ibiza summer season, I’ve chosen for a quite club oriented sound. My CD starts of a little deeper than what you’d normally hear on the Cocoon nights, but then goes into a more groove ridden sound with here and there some melodic touches. Using some melodies is essential for me when making an actual CD recording as it’s impossible to fully recreate a club experience where sometimes all you need is a beat. The CD carries on into some darker techno towards the end, which I love, and finishes on a happy note with a classic remake of “Strings of Life”, soon to be rereleased on my own Rejected label.

Speaking of Cocoon, you’ll be playing at both Amnesia and Space this summer. Tell us what Ibiza means to you as a DJ, and what you’re looking forward to most about the summer (both in Ibiza and elsewhere)?

Ibiza has become very interesting music wise over the last few years, underground music now has a very prominent place on the island and can be heard in all big clubs. I play mostly in Space for We Love Space and Amnesia for Cocoon this year, with one show in Ushuaia (b2b with Pete Tong which will be interesting). Oh BTW, also one show in Space hosted by Tokyo’s no. 1 club Womb on June 12th. So Ibiza takes up an important place for me every summer, but there’s also so many great festivals everywhere else in Europe, from Spain to Belgium, Netherlands to everywhere in Eastern Europe, and not to forget the great summer clubs in Italy.

You’ve had a very big year for your own productions. You don’t release too many tracks but each one you produce is very special. What is your own process like for making music? What is your goal when you’re in the studio?

I’m making a lot of music, but like to keep my output quite low. There’s a lot of music around, and I don’t like to flood the market with mediocre music, I‘d rather wait until I have something I’m 100% sure of after heavy testing in my sets for  few months. I think everyone should be doing this BTW, it would save time listening to promos and Beatport.

There’s no set process for making music, for instance, on the way to DEMF I made a track in the plane and played it out at the festival at night, this hardly ever happens but sometimes it does. The best tracks just come in that one hour time, you get in a flow and just set down a great basis that can be worked out into a solid track later. Almost all my tracks have been done like this, one hour max for the actual idea of a track!

Two notable recent releases were your rework of Moby’s  “After”, and Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” – which you only released on your Soundcloud. How did these two projects come together, and are there any other pop songs or pop artist you’d be interested in working on?

Moby’s rework was just a remix request, but Moby’s management wanted to release it on Rejected which was great. Lana’s edit is just an edit I made for fun, after playing it one time a clip ended on Youtube and everyone was guessing what mix is was, so I thought let’s just finish it properly and get it out on Soundcloud. It’s funny how these things go nowadays. It would have been great if released properly, but this way was fun too, a free gift for the world.

The other side to your music is your label Rejected, which has been on a tear recently with the dancefloor bombs. What does it take for a track to make it onto Rejected, and what are some releases you’ve got coming up?

Unfortunately we don’t get sent a lot of great promos, it’s very, very hard to find good unsigned music, so most of our releases come through asking artists to send us stuff. We’re very picky, but not unreasonably tough, if something musically stands out or works very well on the floor and fits to the label we’ll put it out.

We have a fantastic Steve Rachmad release coming up, just released Nic Fanciulli’s new EP which is serious dancefloor material, and later this summer Astrofarm’s “Strings Of Life” remake called “Strings Ain’t What They Used To Be”.

Some of your prior releases have really been the type of records that catch on with a huge range of DJs, like your remix of Robert Babicz’s “Dark Flower” and your “Sweep the Floor” original.  Any thoughts on why your music in particular seems to catch on with so many different types of DJs, regardless of what kind of genre they are known for?

As I mentioned before, when I release music I try to make something that stands out and is more than just a functional loop, it has to touch on something more musically, although I do aim for the dancefloor with most tracks and remixes, so for me it’s always been about that combination, which has seemed to work out well so far.

You live in Amsterdam, and the Dutch music scene looks to be very strong right now. What’s your perspective on what’s happening in your home country with all the labels, producers and clubs?

There’s a massive scene in the Netherlands, so many small labels and artists that just do their own things on their own pace, not worrying about anything else but their art. We have a great underground club scene supporting these artists which is essential. As soon as you are noticed you get a chance to do your thing in front of an open-minded crowd, so we have the perfect breeding ground for good new artists.

We’re all excited to have you at Cielo next Friday for our Sleepy & Boo + Friends two-year anniversary party  What do you have planned for our night and all your fans?

I can’t wait to be back at Cielo, such a great club and crowd. I hope I’ll get a few hours so I can play an in-depth set, not just the hits but really take the crowd on a journey! So if my playtimes are right, everyone’s in for a musical adventure touching upon different styles and sounds.

And while we’re at it, tell us what some of your favorite things about New York are.

NYC is by far one of my fav cities in the world, next to Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Paris, Berlin and Tokyo. Food is great, the actual city and architecture are fascinating, people are very interesting, art and music are very well represented, and any literature or quality movies that takes place in the city are a pleasure to read and watch.

2011 has been an amazing year of music in NYC, and we think it deserves more than just one night where we say farewell. On Friday, December 30th, we’re kicking off the New Year’s celebrations with the much-anticipated and long-overdue Sullivan Room of JODY WISTERNOFF, the co-founder of the seminal duo Way Out West and one of our favorite producers and DJs. This is the first time Jody has played Sully in ages, and follows up his last spellbinding visit to NYC back in September. Get ready for an intimate night of cutting edge, genre-crossing music with Jody at the helm as we reflect on a great year that was and the possibilities of what’s ahead.

Year after year, Jody continues to evolve and expand his profile as a DJ, producer and remixer. He is one of the few DJs who is able to incorporate multiple genres into his sets, drawing from seemingly different strands of progressive house, new disco and deep house to create something unique. His setlists for his monthly online radio shows “Way Out There” and “Intensified” are pored over by his legions of die-hard fans, fellow DJs and tastemakers alike. Seeing him live on the decks, and witnessing his bond with the crowd, is something very special indeed.

In the Fall of 2009, Way Out West released “We Love Machine”, the fourth studio album from the 16-year partnership of Jody and his WoW partner Nick Warren. Jeff Mills is synonymous with innovation in electronic music. Known worldwide as one of techno’s most important artists, Mills is a true pioneer whose entire career has been dedicated towards pushing the envelope and exploring new grounds with his own music, and his label Axis Recordings. On Saturday, December 3rd, Basic NYC is excited to welcome this iconic artist back to New York for a special event at (le) Poisson Rouge, where he will feature music from his latest project – his re-scoring of the 1966 sci-fi cult classic “Fantastic Voyage”. We’re looking forward to another uncompromising night of futuristic techno with Mills at the helm.

Over the last few years, Jeff Mills has been on a prolific release schedule, crafting multiple albums and EPs. “Fantastic Voyage” is his latest work, a double CD release that highlights what has become Jeff’s signature sound as of late: spacey, abstract pulses and bleeps, combined with hypnotic rhythm signatures and cinematic soundscapes. He has been keenly focused on outer space – with his “Sleeper Wakes” saga and his UFO-inspired “Something in the Sky” releases exploring a sci-fi narrative of space travel and the possibilities of the beyond. But this album focuses on inner space –the original film depicted a journey inside a human body. His performance at (le) Poisson Rouge will feature music from “Fantastic Voyage” along side many of his other recent original productions and classic tracks.

A Detroit native, Mills has been involved with techno music culture since the 80s, when he was one of the key players in Detroit’s burgeoning scene. Known as “The Wizard”, Mills’ was an influential radio DJ whose live mix shows inspired scores of listeners and DJs. He was one of the co-founders of  the infamous Underground Resistance crew alongside “Mad” Mike Banks, and has released dozens of seminal classic albums and tracks. His Purpose Maker releases helped redefine techno in the mid 90s, and spawned “The Bells”, perhaps one of techno music’s finest moments.

Witnessing Jeff Mills DJ is truly something special. Working off of a multiude of turntables,  CDJs and a Roland TR-909 drum machine, Mills is a flurry of activity live. His trademark style is a relentless, stripped-down electronic pulse that sucks in an amalgam of sounds and elements as his set progresses. Veering ably between tribal drums, synthetic melodies and harsh electronics, Mills refuses to let up on the energy, skillfully driving the dancefloor into overdrive.  Mills’ sets are almost entirely composed of his own tracks, and hearing Mills perform is witnessing a master at work, as he skillfully layers multiple tracks and loops to truly take the dancefloor on a journey. In 2012, Mills’ groundbreaking label Axis will be celebrating it’s 20th anniversary with numerous special releases and events planned worldwide.

Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo will warm up the room before Jeff plays an extended set, with Trilogy’s Giovanni getting things started. This is Mills’ second appearance at (le) Poisson Rouge, and the first time he will be performing for more of a “club” audience. He has played for Basic NYC numerous times in the last year, but he has not played in New York since March of this year, and we’re excited to hear everything he has in store for us. One of Detroit’s most versatile decknicians is making his return to New York on Saturday, November 19th. Basic NYC is bringing the Motor City’s STACEY PULLEN back to the Big Apple for his very first appearance at the Greenwich Village dance den (le) Poisson Rouge for a night of dancefloor-wrecking techno hypnosis. Always one of our favorite past guests, Stacey Pullen fuses an unparalleled combination of technical skills with his cutting edge underground selections to make for an explosive night of raw, stripped down rhythms and pulsating basslines and grooves. We’re excited to hear what he has in store for all of us.

Stacey is an artist who takes his music very seriously. Schooled in the art of techno with a first-hand education from the Detroit masters, Stacey’s phenomenal DJing skills consistently wow crowds around the world, week in and week out. In recent years, his profile has exploded worldwide, with a packed schedule of international gigs and revered original tracks and remixes released on some of the industry’s finest labels. 2011 was one of his biggest years yet, with multiple appearances alongside Luciano for his Vagabundos events in Ibiza, jaw-dropping back-to-back sets with Desolat’s Loco Dice, the notorious Circo Loco at DC10, and Sven Vath’s legendary Cocoon night at Amnesia.

In the studio, Stacey has been similiarly productive. His own Blackflag label was relaunched in 2009, and he has contributed his unique sound and style to a huge range of tastemaking labels. His collaboration with Mirko Loko on Cadenza Records was one of this summer’s biggest releases, with tracks on Saved, Desolat, InFine No. 19 and Be As One earning similar acclaim from a huge range of DJs.

This will be Stacey’s first apperance at (le) Poisson Rouge, where Basic NYC has been hosting a number of huge DJs this Fall, with Jeff Mills coming up in December. Joining Stacey on the decks will be Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo, who have hosted Stacey many times before in NYC. Also spinning on the night will be the Samsara brothers,  both Sullivan Room residents and regular Basic NYC guests. The duo of Gino Santos and Chris Cornacchia get the party started in their first LPR appearance. We’ll be bringing extra sound, and featuring visuals from Tito Jimenez at the party. To celebrate our recent one-year anniversary of Sleepy & Boo + Friends, and our continued residency at the club, we just completed a brand-new podcast for Cielo. It joins an esteemed list of fellow Cielo residents and guests, including Tedd Patterson, Nicolas Matar and Louie Vega. We’re loaded up on great music to play on Cielo’s pristine Funktion One sound system, including some brand-new Sleepy & Boo original tracks exclusive edits we’ve been working on. We can’t wait to test drive these on the Cielo dancefloor for one of New York’s most energetic and enthusiastic crowds.

Outside of Cielo, we’ve had the opportunity to DJ and present parties all over the city. We just finished a run at Roseland (opening for deadmau5) where we played three sold-out events. We’ve been hosting events at (le) Poisson Rouge on Saturdays as well, with Mark Farina in town October 15th, and recent memorable nights with Derrick Carter and Miguel Migs. And we’ve been back at the newly-reopened Sullivan Room, celebrating the return of NYC’s homebase for the electronic music underground.

Joining us on the lineup for this party will be Massive Groove’s KYU, and Techtonics’ founder Illich Mujica. Both have been regular Basic NYC guests in the past, and we’re excited to welcome them to the Cielo booth for this event. We’re also celebrating a very special birthday for our good friend Miss Blue Sky, so make sure to hit the DJ booth at midnight for a special complimentary champagne toast.

It’s been over a year since San Francisco’s MARK FARINA has hit New York for one of his mesmerizing solo sets of hypnotizing house music. But on Saturday October 15th, the maestro is back for a late-summer night of his irresistible grooves, as Basic NYC brings Mark to one of New York’s top venues for cutting edge music – (le) Poisson Rouge. This will be his LPR debut, and we can’t imagine a better room to get down to his musical magic and DJ wizardry. This is the re-scheduled date from Saturday August 27th (which was rained out by Hurricane Irene), so we’re even more excited to welcome Mark to NYC.

From his downtempo “Mushroom Jazz” selections, to his wildly influential house sets, Mark Farina has been spreading his love of underground music worldwide for years. A Chicago native who moved to San Francisco in the early 90s, Mark quickly became known as the city’s most important ambassador of the deep, jazzy house that came to define the west cost sound. Few DJs have influenced as many dancers, producers and DJs over the years, but Mark’s unique and uncompromising approach to music has made him an icon to his legions of fans. With his energetic mixing and cutting-edge track selection, Mark’s sets never fail to set the dancefloor on fire.

In 2011, Mark has been firing on all cylinders, with his latest Mushroom Jazz 7 disc earning rave reviews from all corners. His Great Lakes Audio label continues to release the newest and freshest in house music from upcomping and established talent alike.

This will be Mark’s first appearance at (le) Poisson Rouge, a venue that features the best in avant garde and discerning music, from electronic to classical and jazz. After tow joint appearances with Derrick Carter at District 36, this is the perfect venue in which to showcase Mark’s  untouchable gift for connecting with his fans and the dancefloor through his music.

Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo have hosted and played with Mark Farina for several years now, including a handful of memorable nights at the Sullivan Room. They have had a huge summer of gigs around the world, from their monthly Cielo residency, to a mainstage appearance at the Dance.Here.Now. festival in Governor’s Island, to the legendary Ibiza venue Amnesia. For our next Basic NYC bash at (le) Poisson Rouge, we’re excited to host one of our all-star DJs and infamous out-of-town guests. Chicago’s legendary ambassador of boompty-boomp house music, one of the world’s most accomplished producers and DJs, and an all-around party starter par excellence DERRICK CARTER is coming back to NYC on Saturday October 1st bringing his full assortment of beats to LPR for the very first time. We couldn’t imagine a better venue to showcase Derrick’s inimitable sound and style, and his unmatched ability to turn crowds into undulating mobs of dancing bodies. We’re calling this event DERRICK DOES MANHATTAN, and it’s a Gotham-sized night of music and fun with Mr. Carter going big on the beats and bass.

It’s been a whirlwind year for Derrick, who continues to be one of the world’s most in-demand DJs on the decks. This summer saw him obliterating dancefloors all across the globe, with jaw-dropping sets at a huge range of parties and venues. In Ibiza alone he played the notorious Circo Loco at DC-10, Pete Tong’s Friday at Pacha, and “Come Together” at the massive Space. In recent weeks, he returned to London’s legendary Fabric, played at England’s Bestival on the Isle of Wright, and gigged in Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto and more. In the studio he’s been just as busy in 2011, cranking out huge remixes for Green Velvet’s classic “La La Land”, re-launching his acclaimed Classic Music Co. label, and working with a number of independent underground labels. And that doesn’t include his constant stream of private re-edits and exclusive tracks he makes just for his sets, loads of which we’ll be privileged enough to hear at LPR on Saturday.

Mixing up a storm behind the decks, Derrick’s sets are anything but predictable. With his signature sound as his foundation – the bass-thumping, boompty-boompty beats teased together with notes of jazz, R&B and funk – Carter drops everything from disco to techno into the mix. Flawlessly blended together, his music captures everything great about house music and it’s Chicago roots. As a DJ who feels that he’s at his best in an intimate space like (le) Poisson Rouge, we’re eagerly anticipating his debut set on Saturday. His last two New York appearances have been at District 36, sharing the decks with Mark Farina, and this is his first solo set since he crushed Sullivan Room last Halloween.

Joining Derrick on the decks will be one of New York’s local house crews – the SOUP posse, with residents Chris Love, AB Logic and Nick Jagger setting things off. These guys are all Basic NYC regulars and will be getting the house music going in style. Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo are also on hand, having just presented a spectacular night of deep house with San Francisco’s Miguel Migs, Lisa Shaw and Aya at (le) Poisson Rouge on Saturday. Few DJs are as closely identified with their hometown as Miguel “Migs” and San Francisco. For well over a decade, Migs has been one of the defining artists of the unique Bay Area house music scene and sound. His blend of soulful vocals, live instrumentation, and just the right amount of dubby, percussive grooves has become his trademark, and he’s logged many, many miles spreading his vibes around the world. This Saturday, September 24th, Migs is returning to New York to mark a very special occasion – the release of his brand-new artist album “Outside the Skyline.” Joining Miguel for the night will be his long-time vocalist collaborators Lisa Shaw and Aya, performing live some of their classic vocal house anthems and new productions together.

“Outside the Skyline” is Miguel’s third artist album and by far his most ambitious and accomplished release to date.  The album’s eleven tracks feature Miguel’s rock-solid dancefloor beats and grooves, all providing the foundation for stunning collaborations with an inspiring range of artists, covering all the bases of Miguel’s extensive musical repertoire. Disco diva Evelyn “Champagne” King (known for her 1977 classic “Shame”) is featured on the albums’ breakout debut single “Everybody”, while dub and reggae is represented by Jamaican legends Capleton and FreddieMcGregor. Lisa Shaw’s “Lose Control” and Aya’s “The Distance” and “Don’t Stop” continues Miguel’s partnership with these talented vocalists, and you can expect to hear these new releases live on Saturday at (le) Poisson Rouge.

The new album is being released together on OM Records and Salted Music, Miguel’s own imprint he launched in 2004. Salted has evolved into a house music powerhouse, releasing both dancefloor bombs and artist albums alike, exposing DJs and clubbers to new production talent from around the world. Salted is the primary outlet for Miguel’s original music and remixes, and continues to be recognized for top-notch, dancefloor-driven deep and uplifting house.

This will be the fourth time Miguel has played for Basic NYC, and their first event with him at (le) Poisson Rouge, New York’s premiere venue for both avant garde live music and late night electronic dance parties. Getting the party started will be Basic NYC regulars Thomas Pategas and Bajaj Sahib. This Fall, Sleepy & Boo are presenting a number of events at LPR, with Chicago’s legendary Derrick Carter on October 1st and SF’s Mark Farina on October 15th  as they continue a busy run of diverse events. This Friday, September 16th, one of Basic NYC’s favorite guests is back in New York for a special one-off event in the borough of Brooklyn. We’re welcoming the Systematic Recordings label chief, and DJ and producer extraordinaire, MARC ROMBOY back to NYC for his first set in the Big Apple in over a year. For this night, the party is at Williamsburg’s Cameo Galley, a cool and intimate spot in the heart of WillyB. We can’t wait to hear him devastate the dancefloor once again with his patented blend of buzzing techno and chunky, crunchy tech-house.

2011 has been a big year for Marc and his label Systematic, with one massive highlight: the release of “Luna”, his  three-disc collaboration album with Stephan Bodzin, and their subsequent live performance world tour. “Luna” was a tremendous project, a compilation disc of Romboy and Bodzin’s collaborations, a live mix of the originals and remixes, and a collection of the album’s tracks remixed by some of the biggest names in techno and house. Their live tour was equally as extravagant, with the two artists performing on a dizzying array of iPads, computers and MIDI controllers. The tour took them to prestigious venues around the world, and only recently wrapped up with a massive finish at Berlin’s techno temple Berghain.

Marc Romboy established Systematic in 2004, debuting with the collaboration “Every Day of My Life”, jointly produced by himself and Booka Shade. It’s been full steam ahead ever since, as Marc’s label has released a steady stream of ace releases from a huge variety of up-and- coming producers and artists.  Outside of Systematic, Marc’s music has been featured on fine labels including Josh Wink’s Ovum, Jimpster’s Freerange, Dirt Crew, Brique Rouge, Kling Klong and DFA

Joining Marc on the night will be Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo, who had the honor of playing at Marc’s “Luna” tour stop in Miami during this year’s WMC 2011. Also on the decks – and celebrating his birthday – will be NYC’s KYU. And making his first Basic NYC appearance will be Marv212 DJ. Cameo Gallery (tucked away behind the Loving Cup café in Williamsburg) is our home for this event, and functions as both a visual art gallery and live music venue. Marc’s sophisticated take on techno is the perfect fit for the venue, and we’re excited to have him back in NYC for this special night.

One of the dates on the Basic NYC calendar we always look forward to is a visit from the UK’s incredibly talented JODY WISTERNOFF, the co-founder of the seminal duo Way Out West and one of our favorite producers and DJs. This Saturday, September 10th, we’re very excited to welcome Jody back to New York for another night of forward-thinking, dancefloor-motivating music, and we’re excited to be doing it once again at (le) Poisson Rouge –the site of Jody’s last mesmerizing Basic NYC appearance. It’s the perfect mix of performer and venue for the long-overdue return of this crowd favorite and musical maestro.

In the Fall of 2009, Way Out West released “We Love Machine”, the fourth studio album from the 16-year partnership of Jody and his WoW partner Nick Warren. The acclaimed album was hailed by a range of tastemaking DJs, and was followed up by a compilation of remixed tracks from the album. The past year has seen multiple Way Out West live and DJ sets, with Jody’s itinerary taking him from one corner of the globe to another week in and week out.

In recent years, Jody Wisternoff has expanded his profile far beyond just his work with Way Out West. Beginning with the tremendous success of his solo single “Starstrings”, Jody has been earning kudos for his unique production sound and style. Mixing deep house emotions with driving, progressive house energy, Jody’s own remixes and original productions have established him as a hugely respected solo artist and in-demand DJ. Behind the decks, his skills are second to none. Mixing deep, pulsating beats with heavy touches of melody, vocals, and monster basslines, Jody nimbly crosses genres and styles throughout his sets. His music is dancefloor-driven and heavy on the positive vibe and energy that sends a crowd into overdrive. He’s absolutely brought down the house at his prior Basic NYC appearances, and we’re sure this night will be no exception.

(le) Poisson Rouge features one of the most diverse musical programs in New York, presenting everything from avant garde classical to dance music. With a top-notch sound and lighting system, the room is one of New York’s finest, and we have a number of exciting events coming up throughout September and October. Opening the night for Jody will be our guests Thomas Pategas and reyNiko, who have both played at past Basic NYC events and will certainly get the night started off in style. This is the sixth time that Sleepy & Boo have brought Jody Wisternoff to New York and we’re excited to continue our partnership with one of dance music’s most dynamic figures.

Take an abandoned bank in Long Island City, turn it into a sprawling outdoor pool club, and add two of techno music’s most innovative DJs. That’s what’s going down on Friday, September 2nd, when ReSolute and Basic team up for a one-off event in one of New York’s most unique – and very temporary – party spaces. We’re kicking off Labor Day weekend with a thunderous double-header of dark and driving techno as Stockholm’s JOEL MULL and Southampton’s ALAN FITZPATRICK – both standouts of the amazing Drumcode label – come to Long Island City to play at The Palms. It’s a pool party, it’s a dance party, it’s a celebration of everything that’s great about New York in the waning days of summer, and we can’t wait for all of it.

Housed in a former bank, just around the corner from PS1, the Palms evokes an Art Deco-era Floridian beach club, with three “dumpster pools” parked in the backyard for swimming, alongside food trucks, ping pong tables, photo booths, hula hoops and loung chairs galore. Inside, the building itself has been turned into a disco, with a pumping sound system and a massive bar. The venue, created by the 3rd Ward and the Danger camps, with music curated by Mean Red, is only open through Labor Day weekend, and is already drawing huge weekend crowds looking to get their swim on. This is the perfect opportunity for the techno heads to come see a truly unique party spot.

Our artists for this event are two of techno’s most dynamic DJs and artists. Swedish techno stalwart JOEL MULL is an artist known for exploring the interplay between the dark and the light, a producer whose tracks attract discerning DJs looking for something beyond the ordinary. He has been plying his trade for over a decade, with releases on Drumcode, Truesoul,  Cocoon, Jericho and many more. Joining him – in his New York debut – is quite simply one of techno’s most exciting new artists: the UK’s ALAN FITZPATRICK. He is a prolific producer who does not shy away from dark and twisted peak-hour techno, with his 8 Sided Dice label and his acclaimed “Shadows in the Dark” LP on Drumcode focusing on the harder end of the spectrum.  But his recent release on John Digweed’s revered Bedrock label “Moon Palace” features a more melodic side to his music that we’ve heard thus far. Together, this pairing promises to deliver a night of cutting edge music that will be truly memorable.

The lineup is rounded out by Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo, who are co-presenting this party with the ReSolute crew. After a summer spent traveling throughout Europe and the northeast, they are back in NYC with a jam-packed Fall lineup of parties and sets. This is the fourth time they’ve played with Joel Mull, and their first wth Fitzpatrick. Representing ReSolute is NYC favorite Connie, whose sets are always a highlight of their parties, and at the myriad of other events she is featured at in the city.

This event begins at 6pm and goes late into the night, with more music to be announced soon. The party begins in the Palms backyard with some evening swimming, food and pool-side fun, before moving inside for an all-out late night dance session. Time flies when you’re having fun, and that’s why it’s no surprise that we’re already celebrating the one-year anniversary of Sleepy & Boo + Friends at Cielo on Friday, August 12th. Over the last year, on the second Friday of each month, Basic NYC and Sleepy & Boo have brought their bumping, Big Apple beats to club’s dancefloor and DJ booth, with the DJ duo headlining a night of fired-up, hands-in-the revelry. We’ve been joined by a wide range of local friends and guests for each night, creating a party that truly shines the spotlight on what New York’s hometown music scene is all about. And we’ve been honored to present this showcase every month at Cielo – not only one of the world’s top nightclubs for electronic music, but also a cornerstone for NYC’s own local sounds.

It wouldn’t be an anniversary without a party, and on the 12th, we’re celebrating with some great music from start to finish. Joining Sleepy & Boo in the booth will be Autobrennt’s Holosound, who will be playing his second set for the party. He’s a long-time veteran of past Basic NYC events, and a standout NYC DJ exploring the fusion of deep tech and slow-mo disco sounds. Getting the party started will be Mike Murphy, who has played at several of our Sleepy & Boo + Friends events, and is known for his unpredictable sets and on-the-spot re-edits. It’s also Mike’s B-Day bash on the night – and Marina Masic’s as well – only adding to the celebratory vibe at Cielo. It’s been a busy and diverse summer of parties and music for Sleepy & Boo, who have been featured all summer long in DJ Times’ “America’s Best DJ” poll. This night at Cielo marks their return to New York after a month in Europe, where they played at two of Ibiza’s best nightspots. First was a set at Amnesia’s massive terrace for MTV Ibiza’s weekly event (alongside 2ManyDJs, James Murphy and Beardyman), and then at the legendary Pacha Ibiza, where they played the club’s Global Room as part of Pacha NYC’s annual Ibiza night. Memorable sets at District 36, the Dance.Here.Now. Festival at Governor’s Island, Hartford, Connecticut’s Room 960, Costa Rica’s Vertigo, and the Chelsea Hotel in Atlantic City have been some of the highlights of the season, along with a few new radio mixes and online sets.  There’s more to come in New York this Fall as well, with events coming up at le Poisson Rouge, District 36, and of course every second Friday of the month at Cielo.

The July edition is a very special one for us, and we’re looking forward to a truly festive fiesta. The main event on the night is the Birthday celebration for our one-and-only Sleepy, and we’ve also got another B-Day DJ on the lineup in his Cielo debut – Basic NYC regular Jordan Luckett. Back to rock the Cielo decks again is SR Serge from the Sulllivan Room, who just finished a tour of Kiev and Russia. And finally, DJ Times will be in the house with a voting booth for the 2011 America’s Best DJ Poll – where you can vote for Sleepy & Boo and your other favorite US DJs. Fans can then vote for their top 5 DJs online, or in-person at tour events, and the winner is the DJ that receives the most votes. This Friday, Basic NYC welcomes two of electronic music’s premiere artists to New York for the debut of their new party Good Times, taking place at the Hudson Hotel’s downstairs space Good Units. Representing the two cities of Detroit and Berlin, Planet E’s CARL CRAIG headlines event with support from Mobilee’s SEBO K, the first time these two luminaries have shared the decks together in the Big Apple. The name of this event says it all – Good Times is a party all about good music, good people and having a great time together on the dancefloor.

2011 has been a banner year for Detroit’s visionary DJ, producer and label boss Carl Craig. All year long he is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Planet E, his genre-crossing label that has been his primary outlet for two decades. At the 2011 Movement Festival, he debuted the live performance of 69, his artist alter ago – it was 69’s “Jazz Funk Classics” release that first put Planet E on the map and declared that Carl Craig was going to be charting his own, unexpected path as an artist. Craig’s headlining set on the Vitamin Water main stage on Sunday was one of the festivals highlight performances. In recent years Craig has collaborated with artists including Luciano, Moritz Von Oswald and Francesco Tristano, and Amp Fiddler – and he continually pushes the boundaries of everything he does. We’re very much anticipating his DJ set at Good Units, his fourth appearance at a Basic NYC event in the last few years.

Aficionados of cutting edge European sounds are intimately familiar with the Mobilee Records camp, headed up by Anja Schneider. Sebo K is one of the label’s stalwarts, an accomplished producer and DJ who bridges the gap between contemporary sounds with classic deep and techno vintage grooves. Outside of Mobilee, his music has appeared on revered labels including Get Physical, Cecille, Tsuba and many more, where his credo is quality over quantity. This is a very New York appearance for Sebo K and we’re honored to host him at the premiere event for Good Times.

Joining the artists will be Basic NYC’s resident DJs and founders Sleepy & Boo, who celebrated their 7th anniversary this Spring of presenting top-notch events and music in New York. Good Times will take place at various venues throughout the city, and will not be anchored to any one particular sound or style. Also on the lineup is Michael Vieira, the founder of the Greater > Than events and a regular fixture on the decks at Cielo; he has played at many Basic NYC events in the past. Warming things up are Roman Chamomile and Lucas PM, two of the newer faces on New York’s underground scene.

Good Units the dynamic event venue in the basement of the Hudson Hotel, a former YMCA that has been converted into one of the most unique party spots in New York. Hosting everything from live bands to DJ nights to product launches, we couldn’t think of a better space to kick off the debut installment of Good Times.

It’s been a tough winter of snow and slush here in NYC. But March is here, and that means Springtime is just around the corner. We’re excited for the thaw to begin, and we’re starting to heat things up this Friday March 11th at Cielo. It’s the second Friday of the month, and that’s the night when Sleepy & Boo + Friends hit the decks for a fiesta of full-on Big Apple house and techno grooves. It’s the 9th installment of this party, and as always, Cielo is adding to the festivities by offering free entry before midnight – and special bottle and table offers – to anyone who signs up at rsvp@basicnyc.com for our guest list. We’ve also got a free champagne toast at midnight for our birthday friends.

For close to seven years, Sleepy & Boo have been an integral part of New York’s electronic music and nightlife culture. They are the co-founders of Basic NYC, which has served as their platform for presenting international guest DJs in New York, with a long-running Saturday night residency at the Sullivan Room. The event was named New York’s “Best Dance Party” by New York magazine in 2009, and has featured a breathtaking range of DJs, covering the full spectrum of house and techno. As the residents, Sleepy & Boo are well known for setting the musical mood with their opening and closing sets, complimenting the headliners and adding their own musical twist to the night.

But Sleepy & Boo’s range as DJs extends far beyond their own residency. They are regularly asked to DJ at many of New York’s top nightclubs and electronic music events, and work closely with all the city’s leading production groups. They’ve dropped mesmerizing sets at events as diverse as the Electric Zoo Festival (both editions), Ibiza’s legendary Space terrace, as well as numerous opening sets alongside the world’s best international DJs. They launched Sleepy & Boo + Friends in the summer of 2010 at Cielo, and the party features them playing the prime-time slot alongside a lineup of friends. They’ve also kicked off a new partnership with New York’s amazing new dance venue District 36, which has already featured some of Basic NYC’s top DJs rocking that monster room.  Their mission is to spread their own style of cutting edge dance music wherever there is a quality dancefloor with an open-minded crowd.

Joining Sleepy & Boo on this night will be their good friends from the Spinnin’ House crew – Mike Murphy and Chris Cornacchia. This will be their third and first appearance at Cielo for the  party respectively, so make sure to come early to catch all the music. Detroit’s electronic music visionary Carl Craig has had his eyes firmly focused on techno’s future ever since he first emerged from the Motor City in the late 80s. But in 2011, he’s taking some time to look back on one of his biggest achievements – the 20th anniversary of his esteemed Planet E label. Easily one of the most important labels devoted to the art form, Planet E’s commitment to pushing the envelope of techno and its many divergent spinoffs has been evident from it’s very first release. This Friday, February 18th, the year-long anniversary for the label begins at New York’s District 36, as Carl Craig, Derrick May and Paul Woolford kick things off with a night of cutting-edge music on the massive D36 sound system. We are very honored to be a part of what promise to be a very special night of music.

The year-long 20th anniversary of Planet E will encompass all facets of electronic music. Beginning with the District 36 kickoff, there will be events in Berlin, London, Austria, Paris, Ireland and beyond. Like the D36 night, the anniversary parties will feature Carl Craig performing with Planet E label artists and affiliated friends and collaborators. Widening the scope, on February 22nd, a 25-track digital compilation will be released, appropriately titled “Twenty F@#&ing Years – We Ain’t Dead Yet”. The compilation with include some of the label’s best-known releases, as well as some of its more overlooked gems. Planet E will also be reissuing a series of key singles, with fresh remixes from some of today’s most important producers accompanying the originals. The first release is Recloose’s 2000 collaboration with Dwele “Can’t Take It”, featuring new mixes from Cadenza’s Luciano and deep house maestro Milton Jackson. Future remixes from Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Francois K and Mike Banks will be released throughout the year.

The lineup for the District 36 kickoff party speaks for itself. Planet E label boss Carl Craig will be playing the prime time set, his third appearance for Basic NYC in the past year. One of the world’s most in-demand DJs, Craig’s seamless fusion of all strains of dance music have earned him a rightful reputation as a daring selector with an unquestioned ability to turn a dancefloor upside down. Following him will be fellow Detroit pioneer Derrick May, the Transmat label head and producer of the epic “Strings of Life”, “Nude Photo” and other seminal Detroit releases. May’s unique, relentless DJ style – a flurry of activity behind the decks, furiously cutting between two different tracks – leaves crowds breathless and demanding more. Opening for Craig will be Planet E artist Paul Woolford, who is making his first US appearance on the night in several years. Named by DJ Magazine as the British “DJ of the Year” for 2010, Woolford is a fixture on the world’s finest labels, a resident at the legendary “We Love Sundays” party at Space, Ibiza, and will be releasing his first Planet E release in March.

District 36 is New York’s newest destination for die-hard dance fanatics, and this is one of the most ambitious and nights they have featured yet. With its jaw-dropping Gary Stewart sound system, which was tuned this past week by Gary himself, the club will be getting a workout from this trio of techno titans. Opening the night will be Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo, whose events at District 36’s have been some of the club’s most buzzed-about nights yet. The duo will be getting the party started with their own set of deep grooves, and are starting a run of dynamic events at District 36 that will feature M.A.N.D.Y.’s Philipp Jung and Troy Pierce on February 26th, and Axis Records’ Jeff Mills on March 5th.

It’s been well over a year since the Way Out West co-founder Jody Wisternoff rocked New York. But fans of his signature deep and driving dancefloor sound won’t have to wait any longer. This Saturday, February 19th, Basic NYC is bringing Jody back to the Big Apple, and this time we’re welcoming him to a new venue for the party: the gorgeous Le Poisson Rouge. It’ll be the perfect mix of performer and space for the long-overdue return of this crowd favorite and musical maestro.

Jody’s musical trajectory has continued to climb since his last New York appearance. In the Fall of 2009, Way Out West released “We Love Machine”, the fourth studio album from the 16-year partnership of Jody and his WoW partner Nick Warren. The acclaimed album was hailed by a range of tastemaking DJs, and was followed up by a compilation of remixed tracks from the album. The past year has seen multiple Way Out West live and DJ sets, with Jody’s itinerary taking him from one corner of the globe to another week in and week out.

In recent years, Jody Wisternoff has expanded his profile far beyond just his work with Way Out West. Beginning with the tremendous success of his solo single “Starstrings”, Jody has been earning kudos for his unique production sound and style. Mixing deep house emotions with driving, progressive house energy, Jody’s own remixes and original productions have established him as a hugely respected solo artist and in-demand DJ. Behind the decks, his skills are second to none. Mixing deep, pulsating beats with heavy touches of melody, vocals, and monster basslines, Jody nimbly crosses genres and styles throughout his sets. In the world of underground house music, Derrick Carter and Mark Farina are often linked. The two trailblazing DJs are both Chicago natives and lifelong friends, artists who came up together in the fertile landscape of late 80s and early 90s Chicago nightclubs and radio mixshows. But joint appearances by these two are few and far between these days, especially here in NYC. That will all change on Saturday, January 29th, when these two house heavyweights bring their unique styles and sounds to District 36’s thumping dancefloor for what promises to be an amazing night of great music and great vibes. We couldn’t imagine a better pairing on the Gary Stewart Audio sound system, giving those towering stacks a ride through deep and jacking house of all shades and styles.

Both artists are regular guests at Basic NYC’s Sullivan Room nights in New York, and we are honored to help bring them together for one of the premiere events at the brand-new District 36. This club is made for music and dancing, and boasts a custom-designed sound system like none other. Derrick and Mark’s bottom-heavy, bass-laced tracks will have the dancefloor quaking and shaking all night. With Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo on the opening duties, this party is going to be hopping from the get go.

A proud Windy City native, Derrick Carter is synonymous with that city’s storied house music history. He emerged in the mid-1990s on the strength of his DJing, finely–tuned from gigging in Chicago’s fiercely competitive club and warehouse party scene, and his early tracks and productions. His stripped-down, bass-heavy sound, mixed with a wiggly, shuffling rhythm, helped crystallize the jerky, “tracky” style of house that came to define the Chicago sound, while Derrick’s own UK-based label, Classic Music Company, launched him to international acclaim. He continues to be one of the world’s most in-demand DJs and artists; as evidenced by his highly acclaimed brand-new “Fabric 56” mix CD for the esteemed London club’s CD series. Known for his air-tight mixing ability, and unpredictable track selection, Derrick Carter is a hero to all on the dancefloor who know that house music is party music first and foremost.

From his downtempo “Mushroom Jazz” selections, to his wildly influential house sets, Mark Farina has been spreading his love of underground music worldwide for years. A Chicago native who moved to San Francisco in the early 90s, Mark quickly became known as the city’s most important ambassador of the deep, jazzy house that came to define the west cost sound. Few DJs have influenced as many dancers, producers and DJs over the years, but Mark’s unique and uncompromising approach to music has made him an icon to his legions of fans. With his energetic mixing and cutting-edge track selection, Mark’s sets never fail to set the dancefloor on fire. He continues to innovate as an artist – with his brand-new “Mushroom Jazz 7” CD continuing to show his mastery of the deep and dubby downtempo sound, while his Great Lakes Audio label is developing into one of house music’s go-to imprints.

Opening up the night will be Basic NYC resident Sleepy & Boo, the DJ duo who have been bringing top-notch underground music to New York for close to seven years now. They have been a part of District 36 since its opening, and will be following up this event with another magnificent underground showcase: Planet E’s 20th Anniversary with Carl Craig, Derrick May and Paul Woolford on Friday December 18th. Always adept at setting the mood in the club, Sleepy & Boo are excited to be bringing these two pioneers together for one special – and long-overdue – night in New York’s finest new venue for dance music.

Over the last few years, the UK’s Tom Middleton has found a home base in New York for his outer-space musical explorations. Basic NYC has welcomed the Jedi with open arms, and since his April 2009 debut for Basic NYC’s 5th anniversary bash, he has since returned multiple times to take the dancefloor to the outer reaches of the galaxies. Now he’s kicking off a busy 2011 with another late night journey of deep house and uplifting techno, as he returns to Sullivan Room on Saturday, February 5th. This will be Tom’s 4th Basic NYC appearance, and we can’t wait to hear what he has in store for us once again.

Longtime Middleton fans know that 2011 will be a big year for the Jedi. The breaking news is that Global Communication is reuniting for a brand-new mix compilation and summer of tour dates. Global Communication is the groundbreaking partnership with Mark Pritchard that first launched Tom to worldwide fame as an artist and producer in the early 90s. Under a variety of pseudonyms (including Jedi Knights and Secret Ingredients), Mark and Tom’s work pushed the boundaries of all electronic genres, from chilled-out ambient to breaks and deep house. Their seminal album “76:14” still stands as one of the greatest LPs from the heyday of ambient electronica. In October 2010, they performed live together at the Amsterdam Dance Event, and this summer they will be touring at festivals and events around the world. And coming up first will be a compilation on the esteemed NRK label’s “Back in the Box” series. Following up on mixes from DJ Sneak and Dave Clarke, the Global Communication mix will concentrate on the mid 90s era of electronic music, covering everything from the ambient sounds they are associated with to classic (and not-so-known Detroit techno and Chicago house).

As a solo producer, DJ and remixer, Tom has plenty of big releases on the horizon for 2011. He has the honor of launching the new Low-Rise label from UK house heavyweights Defected with his eagerly-anticipated single “Cicadas”, featuring a remix from the much-buzzed-about newcomer Maya Jane Coles. He’s also been dipping deep into a new sound he calls Liquatech, a chilled-out composite that blends classic drum & bass-styled basslines with deep house tempos and moods. He’s already got a hotly-tipped “liquatech” remix of the classic LTJ Bukem & Peshay track “19.5” coming up, with more in the works, including his new “Gliding” EP on the Urbantorque label.

In addition to Sullivan Room, Tom’s recent NYC visits have included memorable sets at both Electric Zoo Festivals, and a Sunday sunset appearance at Water Taxi Beach. This time around, following Sullivan Room, he’ll be making his debut appearance at Francois K’s long-running Deep Space on Monday at Cielo, where he’ll be dropping a different side of his sound. The Jedi’s fans will catch a double dose of Middleton’s music at these two events.

Performing alongside Tom at both events will be Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo, whose 2011 lineup at the Sullivan Room mixes new artists with old favorites alike. In addition to Sullivan Room, they are appearing monthly at Cielo as headliners, and working with District 36 on several big events. The special guests for the night include Holosund from the Global Frequencies camp, who has dropped many memorable opening sets at Basic NYC events in the past. NewcomerTristan Dominguez returns to Sullivan Room to get things started. It’ll be a birthday bash for both of these guests, so expect plenty of festive moments on the dancefloor for this event.

One of the international underground’s key players makes his return visit to the Sullivan Room this Saturday night for another night of top-notch dancefloor grooves. Germany’s Nick Curly, whose red-hot fusion of deep, percussive house with techno elements has rapidly earned him a huge following worldwide, follows up an amazing September debut for Basic NYC on Saturday, January 22nd, as his “Keep On 2011” tour his the Big Apple.

It’s been a dizzying rise for Nick, who made a huge global splash with a string of releases in 2008, and has been going non-stop ever since. Nick’s own productions helped revitalize and energize deep house music, adding enough techno punch to toughen things up for the bigger rooms. He emerged from his hometown of Mannheim, Germany, along with several other key producers – including Johnny D, Gorge, Marcus Fix and Andomat 3000 – a group which represented the so-called “Mannheim Sound”. But today Nick is truly recognized as a global innovator, with world-class DJs all supporting his labels and his productions.

2010 was his highest-profile year yet. He was all over Ibiza this past summer, with him mixing one of the discs for Sven Vath’s “Party Animals” Cocoon Ibiza CD, and a summer-long headlining residency at Space’s Kehakuma party. To add to his achievements, he made his Essential Mix debut on July 31st, playing for Pete Tong’s prestigious BBC Radio Show. He just rocked the annual BPM Festival, and is busy touring worldwide to spread his unique take on the underground sound. With his 8Bit and Cecille labels firing on all cylinders,

Joining Nick on the decks will be Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo, who have played with Nick for his last two New York appearances. Their Basic NYC schedule for 2011 is loaded with fresh new artists, with Curly one of the highlights on a schedule that includes Carlo Lio, Tom Middleton, Jody Wisternoff and Solomun and UNER. Warming things up will be two sets of newcomers to Sully – Dave Turk and Pasquale, who can be seen at the Porch among other spots, and the House Assassin’s Ken Masters and Merk-E. 2011 has arrived and New York is ready to shake off its extended holiday hangover. The new year is about looking ahead, and we’re looking ahead to this Friday January 14th, when Sleepy & Boo + Friends return to Cielo for another night of bumping beats, delivered with a big dose of Big Apple flair. This is the seventh strong installment of the party, and each month, we continue to celebrate good times and great music at New York’s top spot for top-notch electronic music. For over six years, Sleepy & Boo have been an integral part of New York’s electronic music and nightlife culture. They are the co-founders of Basic NYC, which has served as their platform for presenting international guest DJs in New York, with a long-running Saturday night residency at the Sullivan Room. The event was named New York’s “Best Dance Party” by New York magazine in 2009, and has featured a breathtaking range of DJs, covering the full spectrum of house and techno. As the residents, Sleepy & Boo are well known for setting the musical mood with their opening and closing sets, complimenting the headliners and adding their own musical twist to the night.

But Sleepy & Boo’s range as DJs extends far beyond their own residency. They are regularly asked to DJ at many of New York‚Ä’s top nightclubs and electronic music events, and work closely with all the city’s leading production groups. They’ve dropped mesmerizing sets at events as diverse as the Electric Zoo Festival (both editions), Ibiza’s legendary Space nightclub, as well as numerous opening sets alongside the world’s best international DJs. In the summer of 2010, they launched their own monthly residency at Cielo, which features them playing the prime-time slot alongside a lineup of friends. They’ve also begun working with New York’s brand-new District 36. Their mission is to spread their own style of cutting edge dance music wherever there is a quality dancefloor with an open-minded crowd.  From deep house to tough techno, Sleepy & Boo’s expansive, genre-crossing sets feature the best labels, sounds and producers creating the most irresistible dance music of the moment.

Joining Sleepy & Boo on this night is Samsara, two brothers who are regular faces on New York’s dancefloors. They are resident DJs at the Sullivan Room’s KGB events, a part of the Global Frequencies crew, and are well-known as DJs who can move effortlessly between sounds and styles in their sets. They’ll be making their Sleepy & Boo + Friends debut at this party. Getting things started is a true veteran of New York’s dancefloor underground – the B-Day Boy Manny Freytes. Manny is a key part of Danny Tenaglia’s Be Yourself parties, and is regularly asked to open for DT at parties around the world, in addition to rocking the dancefloor on his own at many of New York’s finest venues. Manny’s working on some exclusive edits for this night, and will also be making his S&B+Friends debut on the night.

This Saturday, January 15th at Sullivan Room is a night dedicated to techno music. While we were originally hosting the UK’s newest rising techno hero and 8 Sided Dice label head Alan Fitzpatrick, he’s unable to be joining us for the night due to complications with his Visa. But the party still goes on, and we’ve got a more than able replacement as Brooklyn’s own Gennaro Le Fosse will be stepping in to take over from Alan. It’ll be a night of full-on, no-nonsense underground music with a full NYC lineup of DJs complementing Gennaro at Sully, with Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo dropping a techno set of their own, while Simon Heyliger and Chris Cornacchia get the party started.

Alan Fitzpatrick made this statement regarding the Sullivan Room party, and his other North American dates. “It is with deep regret that I have been forced to cancel my forthcoming North American tour. Unfortunately, unexpected visa issues have meant that I will not be able to make the trip. I was really looking forward to coming to play at Basic and to meeting everyone who has said they were planning to come and see me play. I’m looking forward to arranging a new date as soon as possible.”

Techno music is truly an international language,, and one with many regional dialects. When telling the techno story, New York’s own contributions to the genre cannot be ignored, and right at the center of the city’s beating techno pulse is the borough of Brooklyn. Without a doubt, Gennaro Le Fosse is one of the biggest contributors to the sound, style and attitude of Brooklyn techno.  He was a co-founder of the Program 2 duo in the early 90’s (alongside Victor Calderone), a group that released an album on Sire Records. He has worked with fellow New Yorkers Abe Duque and Joey Beltram, and he started his own techno-minded imprint (Convolute). With a busy touring schedule, and releases on many of the underground’s finest labels (including 8 Sided Dice), he has become a worldwide ambassador for techno music, New York-style.

While we are working on rescheduling Alan Fitzpatrick, we’re excited to be hosting Gennaro for this night. This will be his second appearance at Sullivan Room for Basic NYC, and his first as a headliner. Getting the party started will be Chris Cornacchia and Simon Heyliger, both regular fixtures on the local scene.

And so after 364 fantastic nights in Lower Manhattan, as the year draws to a close on Friday 31st, Cielo welcomes one and all for our finale to 2010 with Willie Graff and special guests Sleepy & Boo bringing in the New Year. The atmosphere inside Cielo is sure to heat up as we edge ever nearer to 2011 with an amazing and equally eclectic selection of guest performers to see out the old and in with the new in fine style.

2010 has been another dynamic year for Cielo, as we continue to present one of New York’s most diverse programs of cutting edge electronic music week in and week out. From the best in international talent to New York’s finest hometown DJs, Cielo remains as the destination for discerning clubbers eager to hear great music surrounded by their peers. Guiding the dancefloor for New Year’s Eve will be Cielo’s long-time resident Willie Graff, the Ibiza native who has helped define the Cielo sound since day one. Willie’s DJ sets have always caused a stir but now his productions are earning him widespread acclaim as well, with his “Give You Up” EP on Freerange Records (with partner Tuccillo) hailed by DJs across the board. Willie will dropping an extended set of his typically forward-thinking music as we go well into the morning to welcome in 2011.

Setting the night off will be Sleepy & Boo, the duo whose Basic NYC events have supplied New York dancefloors with top-notch, genre-crossing music for close to seven years. In 2010, they joined the Cielo rotation with their own once-a-month Friday event, which features them playing their own prime-time set to a rapt audience. Add in their numerous opening sets at Cielo for renowned out-of-town guests and its clear that this duo is right at home on the club’s Funktion One sound system.

New Year’s is a time for saying farewell and welcoming the new. And after a fantastic 2010, and with an exciting 2011 on the horizon, Basic NYC and its resident DJs Sleepy & Boo will be getting the new year started the best way they know how – with a rocking prime-time set of underground grooves at the Sullivan Room. The party takes place on Saturday January 1s,t 2011 – AKA 1/1/11 – and since the Sullivan Room is Basic NYC’s number one place for music and parties, this will be the perfect way to get 2011 up and running. Joining them for the event will be some of their regular DJ guests and friends, as we present an all New York-lineup of talent to start the year off.

It’s been a big year for Sleepy & Boo, who have brought their sound and sets to new venues and new places. The 2010 highlights have been many, with their monthly Cielo residency, sets at Ibiza’s legendary Space, and an incredible array of weekly guests at Sullivan Room as some of the most notable. After welcoming in 2011 at Cielo on New Year’s Eve, they’ll be hitting up Sullivan Room for this prime-time set the next night. Joining Sleepy & Boo on the decks will be a full lineup of New York DJs. Dusk Recordings’ Lance Jordan returns to the Sullivan Room with his own driving and techy take on house music. Fakin’ Moves’ Mikey G bring his  unique blend of dancefloor-flavored energetic house in his Sullivan Room return. Tristan Dominguez returns to Basic NYC debut with an opening set of deep and moody techno.

2011 is going to be another great year of cutting edge electronic music and parties, with loads of new artist set to make their debut at the Sullivan Room this year. It’s been an amazing 2010 at the Sullivan Room, and for our last Basic NYC bash of the year, we couldn’t imagine a better guest DJ than SAW Recordings head honcho Satoshi Tomiie. One of our highlights this year has been hosting Satoshi for his own three-night residency, and for his last night he’ll be dropping an extended set of his unique fusion of deep, dark and moody tech-house. We’re celebrating the seasons on Saturday, and we’re excited to hear Satoshi’s soundtrack for our annual holiday bash. Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo will be setting the mood with their own opening set for Satoshi.

Japan’s Satoshi Tomiie has called New York home for the better part two decades. But it’s rare to find him in his hometown doing what he does every weekend at clubs around the world: rocking the dancefloor with his signature soulful and hypnotic grooves. When it comes to manning the decks, Satoshi  is one of the true masters. Eschewing the big hits and typical dance music clichés, Satoshi is all about building a vibe and subversively taking a crowd to the outer limits. Covering a huge range of genres and sounds, Satoshi’s sets are impeccably programmed, with everything tied together by his seamless mixing. Using loops and effects to draw out the mixes, Satoshi’s selections really come to life in his mixes – with techno, deep house, tech-house all getting exposure.

For almost 20 years, Satoshi has been a fixture in the international underground, with his own productions, remixes and DJ sets establishing him as one of house music’s most iconic artists. His discography is extensive and varied, from his classic early tracks like “Tears” and “I’ll Be Your Friend” to his “Full Lick” artist album and the massive singles it spawned. His own SAW Recordings label – established with Hector Romero –has released dozens of underground classics and broken new international talent. In 2010, he released his own mix CD for Mykonos’ Cavo Paradiso club, released a new set of remixes for his own Mes “Back to Basics” track, and continued to travel the world with a jam packed international DJ schedule.

Opening for Satoshi will be Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo, who have had their own busy 2010, a year in which they’ve played sets all over the world, and especially right here in New York. They’ll be dropping their own groove-heavy set before Satoshi takes over. Warming things up will be a special record release party for New York’s Molaman Records crew – with the whole roster of Molaman DJs showcasing their sound. Kid Ghost, Eddie Andrews, Darren DeGeorge, Buddakhan and Forbidden will be on rotation, with special giveaways for the early guests. 2011 is shaping up to be another great year of music at Sullivan Room, but we’re happy to wrap up this amazing year with one of our favorite DJs.

Techno music has become an international phenomenon and culture, a constantly evolving artform that continues to spawn new sub-genres, styles and sounds. But its clear that this music would not be what it is today if not for the efforts of key individuals, including Detroit’s legendary innovator Derrick May. One of the driving forces behind the Motor City’s techno explosio inte late 80s and early 90s, May continues to be one of the music’s leading ambassadors and tastemakers, and a relentless DJ on decks. He’ll be making his return to Basic NYC after an extended absence on Saturday, December 11, and is ready to rock the Sullivan Room once again with his uncompromising fusion of cutting edge music. Adding to the festivities will be a special B-Day bash for Sullivan Room’s Sergei Skilarenko, so we’re anticipating a charged-up night of music and celebrations.

Some DJs see themselves as entertainers. But Derrick May fashions himself as a combatant, ready to do battle with the clubbers. “The audience is my enemy. My job is to destroy them,” he said in a recent interview. “That’s the way I approach any gig. I want to hurt you.  I want you on your knees. That’s my approach.” It’s evident in his unique DJing style as well. May is a flurry of activity and energy behind the turntables, furiously tweaking EQ knobs, dropping new records into the mix and then quickly tossing them aside. Forget smooth and polished: Derrick May takes chances on the decks, mixing in new tunes with timeless classics and forgotten gems from across all genres of music.

Derrick May cemented his legacy with a string of now-legendary releases in the late 80s – “Nude Photo” and “Strings of Life” among the most acclaimed. His Transmat label quickly became known as one of the beacons for the new sounds that came from Detroit, and along with his fellow “Belleville Three” members Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins, May entered the international DJ scene. In many ways, he hasn’t looked back since, as he continues a relentless touring schedule that takes him across Europe, Asia and Australia almost every weekend.

This will be May’s third Basic NYC appearance at Sullivan Room, and his first since 2008. Joining him on the decks will be Basic NYC’s residents Sleepy & Boo, who have presented a tremendous 2010 at Sullivan Room. Newcomers Dimitri.S opens up, with producer, DJ and designer Mitch Wells getting the party started. We’re very excited for this return visit from one of electronic music’s all-time pioneers.

Basic NYC’s Saturdays at the Sullivan Room are best known for bringing top-tier international talent DJs  to the club’s intimate dancefloor and pumping sound system. But that doesn’t mean that the hometown talent doesn’t get a chance to shine at Sully. That’s the concept behind “Locals: NYC”, which debuts at the Sullivan Room on Saturday, December 4th, with a lineup entirely devoted to the local DJs and artists who are the lifeblood of New York’s dance music scene.

The Big Apple’s dance music culture spans a wide range of sounds, artists and venues, and we’ll be featuring just a glimpse of what New York’s local scene has to offer on the 4th. Some are regular guests at Basic NYC; some are new artists making their debut.

The lineup includes AB Logic and Brian Anderson from the Smoke City and 1200 Trax labels, who have played many Basic NYC nights in the past alongside guests like Derrick Carter and Mark Farina. Wobble Music’s Arana makes his return to Basic NYC; recently he’s been hosting and playing at his own Wobble monthly at Cielo. George Quest and Tiho from the United Freakz will be closing the party out with their own set of deep and groove-heavy house. Dali from Groove Therapy Management returns to Sully after an opening set alongside DJ Dan in November. Tristan Dominguez makes his Basic NYC debut with an opening set of deep techno; he’s recently been making the rounds at venues like Bar 13 and La Vie. Finally, Brooklyn’s Troia celebrates his birthday on the night with a set on the decks.

While local DJs are always a part of every Basic NYC night at the Sullivan Room, we’re excited to be able to devote a whole night this lineup of Big Apple talent. This event is a great way to kick off December at Sully, which features Sergei’s B-Day celebration with special guest Derrick May on December 11th, and a Basic NYC holiday bash with Satoshi Tomiie on December 18th.

For almost seven years, Sleepy & Boo’s Basic NYC has been rocking Saturdays at the Sullivan Room with a wide assortment of underground beats, delivered by a huge range of guest DJs. But on Saturday, November 20th, for one special night, the party is expanding upstairs. For this event, Basic NYC is teaming up with KGB to take over Sully’s sister venue – the Sullivan Hall – as we welcome two sets of outstanding guest DJs and performers. In the Sullivan Room downstairs, the UK’s mighty Layo & Bushwacka! make their long-awaited Basic NYC debut with an extended set of their signature dark and twisted tech-house. Upstairs, Detroit’s leading innovator and Planet E boss Carl Craig will be rocking Sullivan Hall, with the Motor City’s hugely talented Amp Fiddler adding live keyboards to the mix. Partygoers will be able to go between floors to catch all the music at this dynamic night of underground sounds.

Carl Craig truly has his hands involved in every aspect of electronic music culture. There’s little he hasn’t achieved in his nearly 20 years of making and playing forward-thinking beats. He’s a masterful DJ whose itinerary takes him to the world’s finest clubs and festivals each and every weekend, and a hugely in-demand producer and remixer, who continues to create timeless music that captures the attention of international tastemakers and music fans alike. From undisputed classics like the Paperclip People’s “Throw” (recently covered by the LCD Soundsystem) to his Grammy-nominated remix of Junior Boys’ “Like a Child”, Craig’s music continues to blur the boundaries of genres and sounds.

Joining Carl will be fellow Detroit native and multi-instrumentalist Amp Fiddler, who will be playing keyboards and adding his own vocals to the mix. A music industry veteran, Amp has performed with artists as varied as Parliament Funkadelic, Prince, Primal Scream and Moodymann, and released his own solo albums “Waltz of a Ghetto Fly” and “Afro Strut.”

London’s Layo & Bushwacka! have been at the center of the UK underground since their emergence in the late 90s. The duo have built a storied career on the strength of their albums, their productions and their mesmerizing live sets, which include such standout moments as “Love Story”, their top 10 UK hit from 2002. From their legendary All Night Long residency at the now-departed The End in London, to their new series of roving parties Shake It!, to headlining sets around the world, Layo & Bushwacka! are prime purveyors of their own unique brand of dark, heady late-night tech-house grooves, the perfect soundtrack to serious sessions on the dancefloor. This will be their first-ever Basic NYC appearance, and we couldn’t think of better guests to have anchoring this event.

Joining the special guests will be a host of some of New York’s local DJs. Also making his Basic NYC debut on the night will be Gennaro Le Fosse, one of the homegrown talents of New York’s own storied techno culture. An accomplished producer and globetrotting DJ, Le Fosse got his start as part of Program 2, the techno duo that helped launched the career of fellow Brooklynite Victor Calderone. His productions have been released on his own Convolute label, as well as renowned imprint 8 Sided Dice Recordings among others. Since the brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz joined forces to make music in the mid-90s, their duo Tiefschwarz has been one of the most important artists to emerge from Germany’s hugely influential electronic music culture. They’ve been key tastemakers, trendsetters and musical ambassadors for the last fifteen-plus years, touring worldwide and dropping dozens of massive original tracks, albums and remixes along the way.  On Saturday, November 13th, Basic NYC welcomes one half of this pioneering duo as Ali Schwarz brings the Tiefschwarz sound and vibe to Sullivan Room, the first time we’ve hosted any of the Schwarz brothers in New York. We’re anticipating an eclectic, electric set of cutting—edge music at this special Sully party.

The Tiefschwarz discography is extensive and varied, covering wide swaths of house, techno, electro and electronica. From stripped-down, dancefloor tracks and tools, to high-profile remixes for some of pop’s biggest names (Madonna, Depeche Mode, Missy Elliott), there’s not one style or sound that Tiefschwarz hasn’t had their hand in. They’ve released their music on dozens of top-flight dance labels from across the underground spectrum, including Sven Vath’s Cocoon, Steve Lawler’s ViVa, Francois K’s Wave Music to name a few, and have done mix CDs and compilations for Fabric and Strictly Rhythm.

But for the last few years, their focus has been on their own imprint Souvenir, which has served as their primary output for their own music, and a place to develop new talent. In May of 2010, they released “Chocolate”, their most recent artist album and a perfect document of where their sound is now as DJs and producers. Featuring collaborations with Dave Aju, Cassy and Seth Troxler, the album was widely hailed as one of their best works to date. Just last week saw the release of “Melted Chocolate 2”, the second volume of remixes of from the album project, with up-and-comers Kiki, Penner & Muder, and Soul Clap among some of the standout artists on the release. As DJs, Tiefschwarz are found at all the world’s great clubs, festivals and party destinations, from Tokyo to Brazil and all over Europe. This is a very rare intimate appearance for Tiefschwarz, and we’re certain Ali’s sound will be a perfect fit with the Sullivan Room’s party vibe.

Warming up for Ali will be Basic NYC’s residents Sleepy & Boo, who will be building the groove with their own set of percussive and deep house. Between Sullivan Room, and their own Sleepy & Boo residency at Cielo, the duo have had a busy fall of music and parties, and this debut Tiefschwarz appearance is certainly one of the highlights on their calendar. Getting the party started will be the Munch Machine, aka Peter Munch, who is making his first appearance since joining Sleepy & Boo at Cielo on Halloween night. In true Tiefschwarz fashion, expect a wide range of musical styles as this party progresses, capped off by the underground electronic revelry that Tiefschwarz is known for.

The West Coast’s DJ Dan has been rocking dancefloors around the world for two decades his signature party-minded sounds. But 2010 has been an especially meaningful year for Dan, with his long-awaited, much-anticipated debut artist album “Future Retro” finally dropping. In celebration of the release, DJ Dan is returning to New York this Saturday night, for his fourth Basic NYC appearance at the Sullivan Room. Always a crowd favorite, Dan has called the Sullivan Room his favorite spot in NYC, so we’re excited to welcome him back to the Big Apple for this special night.

Despite years in the music industry, “Future Retro” is Dan’s first artist album. The album is structured as two separate projects – with “Future” and “Retro” sections mixing new tracks with refurbished classics. Dan’s reworked versions of “Can You Feel It?” and “Baby Wants to Ride” pay homage to classic house and techno tracks that were his early inspirations, while “Drop Hits” and “Disco Request” feature Dan’s more contemporary sounds and styles. Supported by a huge range of DJs and clubbers alike, the album is an encapsulation of Dan’s entire career as a DJ, producer and music lover.  In addition to the album, Dan continues to be in the limelight with recent remixes for Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Janet Jackson.

A lifelong west coaster (and native of Olympia, Washington), DJ DAN has been a beloved veteran of the electronic music circuit for over 15 years now. There’s no nonsense about the way Dan approaches his music, no pseudo-seriousness: he’s all about making the party more explosive each and every time he gets on the decks. Energetic house, techno, breaks and funk are all part of his arsenal, and he’s equally as comfortable rocking huge venues as he is in the smaller rooms. Coachella, the Love Parade, Ministry of Sound and the huge Creamfields festival have all been stops for Dan over the years, and his international DJ itinerary is packed every weekend.

Dan built his name and his following as one of the most dynamic DJs in the flourishing California rave scene of the early 1990s. Known as one of the earliest proponents of the funky breaks sound, Dan became a popular figure up and down the west coast. As a resident of San Francisco’s legendary Funk y Tekno Tribe, his reputation as being one of America’s premier party rockers spread rapidly, and his first forays into production soon followed. Tracks like “Loose Caboose” and “Needle Damage (That Zipper Track)” became staples of the world’s leading DJs, and he became a regular figure on the mix CD racks at the record stores, with mixes for labels like Moonshine, Kinetic and Thrive collectively selling over 300,000 copies.

Joining Dan on the decks will be Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo, who will be closing the party down – and with an extra hour of fun thanks to daylight savings, expect some seriously twisted late night madness. Sleepy & Boo just wrapped up an epic Halloween weekend, which saw the duo rocking a packed house at Roseland for the sold-out deadmau5 extravaganza, and their own headlining set at Cielo Halloween night. Halloween in New York is easily one of the wildest weekends of the year, and to celebrate this most freakish of festivals, Basic NYC is welcoming the mighty DERRICK CARTER back to the Sullivan Room this Saturday, October 30th. We couldn’t think of a better guest to grace the DJ booth for our haunted Halloween bash – Derrick’s mix of thumping Chicago house and fiery disco will have all the ghouls and ghosts dancing up a storm on the Sullivan Room’s intimate dancefloor. Joining him in the booth will be his longtime friend and collaborator HONEY DIJON, a favorite in New York’s underground circles, who will be making her Basic NYC debut for this special night. Get ready for loads of tricks and treats from these two esteemed house maestros at this Halloween eve bash.

Mixing up a storm behind the decks, Derrick’s sets are anything but predictable. With his signature sound as his foundation – the bass-thumping, boompty-boompty beats teased together with notes of jazz, R&B and funk – Carter drops everything from disco to techno into the mix. Flawlessly blended together, his music captures everything great about house music and it’s Chicago roots. As a DJ who feels that he’s at his best in an intimate space like Sullivan Room, Derrick always puts on quite a show at the club.

A proud Windy City native, Derrick Carter is synonymous with that city’s storied house music history. He emerged in the mid-1990s on the strength of his DJing, finely–tuned from gigging in Chicago’s fiercely competitive club and warehouse party scene, and his early tracks and productions. His stripped-down, bass-heavy sound, mixed with a wiggly, shuffling rhythm, helped crystallize the jerky, “tracky” style of house that came to define the Chicago sound, while Derrick’s own UK-based label, Classic Music Company, launched him to international acclaim. He has released a string of legendary tracks and remixes, on labels as diverse as OM, Get Physical, NRK, and turned out mix CDs for Ministry of Sound, Azuli, and DMC. This is Derrick’s 4th Basic NYC appearance in 2010, and we can’t wait to welcome this pioneer back for another late night workout.

Born in Chicago and based in New York, Honey Dijon’s sound mixes the best of both locales, while encompassing a wide repertoire of musical styles. Everything from techno to classics finds a place in her sets, which have made her a favorite at the leading clubs, festivals and events around the world. As a producer, Honey has released originals and remixes on respected labels including Nervous Records, Star 69, Bump Music, 4Kenzo Recordings and Digitial Disco.

Sullivan Room will be completely decked out for Halloween, only adding to the basement room’s haunted ambiance; costumes of all shapes and sizes are welcome at this party. Joining Derrick on the lineup will be Basic NYC guests Brian Anderson and AB Logic, both rising producers in the underground house scene. Beyrouth opens up the party, returning to Sullivan Room for a special Birthday Bash set. Dance music and club culture is all about the latest tastes and trends, but there’s something about hearing one of the original creators live that makes for an unforgettable experience. This is what has made the two Sullivan Room sets from the “Godfather of House” Frankie Knuckles such memorable nights of soulful and uplifting house music. Now we’re honored to welcome this legend back to Basic NYC on Saturday, October 23rd, when Frankie returns to New York for another intimate dancefloor session. This will be Frankie’s third appearance for Basic NYC in less than a year, and we’re eagerly awaiting the return from this musical maestro.

Music is Frankie’s life, and he has been devoted to dance music for over 30 years. His list of achievements and successes is long, but perhaps his most important contribution to this culture was his residency at Chicago’s Warehouse nightclub in the late 70s. Frankie, who came to Chicago from his native New York (where he played alongside Larry Levan at the Continental Baths), developed a powerful connection with the Warehouse crowd through the music he was playing. Alongside contemporary R&B and disco music, Frankie played his own re-edits and reel-to-reel rhythm tracks. Emphasizing the drums, and amplified on the Warehouse’s powerful sound system, Frankie’s music gave birth to a new form and a new term came to describe it: “house” music, the shorthand name for the club itself.

It’s been a magical ride for Frankie ever since those days. He’s become one of house music’s most beloved global ambassadors, sharing his spirit at clubs and festivals around the world on a weekly basis. He continues to have a thriving and very successful production career, having crafted some of the most enduring house anthems to date. He co-founded New York’s Def Mix production group, and in 1997, he won a Grammy Award for Best Remixer, Non-Classical.  He had a street in Chicago named after him in 2004, at a ceremony presided over by then Illinois State Senator Barack Obama. In 2008, he earned a whole new audience based on the strength of his stunning remix of “Blind” by the contemporary disco group Hercules and Love Affair

Joining Frankie on the night will be Open Bar Music’s Davidson Ospina, who is making his Basic NYC debut on the night. An experienced producer with a discography dating back to the mid 90s, Davidson’s fusion of deep and tech sounds will be setting the room up for Frankie. Getting the party started is the Mixer Assassin duo, who have contributed many memorable opening sets to the Sullivan Room over the years. Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo will be on hand as well, as they continue a stellar Fall season of dynamic Sullivan Room nights.

Frankie Knuckles – “CHICAGO STYLIN’ – May 2010 by djmixes

For techno music aficionados, few artists draw more praise than the producer and DJs who have emerged from Sweden over the last decade. At the center of this Stockholm scene is JOEL MULL, a dynamic artist who is known as much for bonecrushing techno as he is for deeper, more melodic sounds. On Saturday, October 16th, he’ll be making his long-awaited return to the Sullivan Room, when he brings his diverse bag of underground sounds back to New York for his second Basic NYC set. With his brand-new album “Sensory” coming soon, get ready for a night of cutting edge grooves from this innovator.

Joel Mull, along with his peers and partners such as Adam Beyer, Alexi Delano, Cari Lekebusch, and Jesper Dahlback, has been at the vanguard of Sweden’s techno scene since the mid-90s, but today his influence is felt worldwide. A dynamic producer and remixer, Joel’s music covers a wide range of feelings and sounds, veering from tough, hypnotic techno, to more moody and melodic minded house. He’s found a home for his music on a wide variety of cutting edge labels, with releases on Enemy Records, Spectrum Recordings, Nic Fanciulli’s Saved, Sven Vath’s Cocoon and Steve Bug’s Audiomatique among others. His fourth album “Sensory” will be released on Beyer’s Truesoul label, and promises to be a thrilling showcase for his unique take on techno.

Joel’s DJing schedule reflects the worldwide regard for his turntable skills. He kicked off a busy summer with a memorable set at the 2010 Movement festival in Detroit, where he pummeled the Beatport  tent during the rain-soaked closing day. Gigs at prestigious clubs and festivals – Japan’s Air, the Ukraine’s Kazantip, Montreal’s Stereo, and a massive Drumcode warehouse party in London – are just some of his recent stops.

Joining Joel on the decks at the Sullivan Room will be Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo, who’ll be closing out the night with one of their signature late-night Sully sets. Fresh off a prime-time set at Cielo, and a memorable closing set after Cajmere, the duo are excited to keep the techno momentum going after Joel. Getting things started will be Chris Cornacchia in his Sullivan Room debut. Global Frequencies resident, and longtime Basic NYC guest, Thomas Pategas has the honor of opening for Mull. Jeff Mills is recognized as one of the most accomplished and acclaimed artists in all of electronic music. For close to three decades, he’s continuously pushed the boundaries of techno, along the way shattering numerous pre-conceived perceptions of what music can be, and how it should be performed. This Saturday, October 2nd, Basic NYC is honored to welcome Jeff back to the Sullivan Room for his fourth appearance at the venue in the last two years. He will be continuing his “Tomorrow Plus X” project with an extended set of custom-made, cutting-edge techno.

Launched at the Sullivan Room in May, Mills’ Tomorrow Plus X is being developed into a live performance for 2011. In a recent interview, he detailed his plans for the live element. “It’s about positive and negative forces, in a musical sense,” he says. “It will be a DJ performance in which I only use vinyls of a particular colour. There will be a series of 30 vinyls, with roughly four tracks on each 12”, which will only be used for this performance.” Tomorrow Plus X is another one of Mills’ science-fiction inspired representations of music, a hypothetical futuristic scenario in which minimal music is deployed as a counterbalance against an unnamed, negative force in the universe.

Witnessing Jeff Mills DJ is truly something special. Typically working off of three turntables, two CDJs, and a Roland TR-909 drum machine, Mills is a flurry of activity live. His trademark style is a relentless, stripped-down electronic pulse that sucks in an amalgam of sounds and elements as his set progresses. Veering ably between tribal drums, synthetic melodies and harsh electronics, Mills refuses to let up on the energy, skillfully driving the dancefloor into overdrive. The last few years have been a flurry of activity for Jeff, with his acclaimed “Sleeper Wakes” and “Something in the Sky” performances being staged around the world. He recently reunited with Underground Resistance’s “Mad” Mike Banks to record a new X-102 album and perform at several live events in Europe and Asia. In 2011, he’ll performing his soundtrack for the film Fantastic Voyage live in Paris, and he’ll be releasing the follow up album to Sleeper Wakes as well. In addition, he continues a very busy DJing and performance schedule around the world.

Opening for Mills on the night will be Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo, who will be playing their own set of deep and hypnotic tech-house.  The Mills appearance is one of the highlights of a busy October schedule at the Sullivan Room that includes everything from deep house with Frankie Knuckles on October 23rd to Joel Mull’s Swedish tech-house on October 16th. Warming up the party will by NYEX’s PJay, the former Tronic Treatment resident who has been DJing at and organizing his own events at Stay and National Underground n the Lower East Side. If you’ve been anywhere near a dancefloor in the last few years, you’ve certainly heard some of Nick Curly’s music. To say that his sounds have caught on with international DJs would be an understatement; his red-hot fusion of deep, percussive house with techno elements has rapidly earned him a huge following worldwide. As a producer, a DJ, and as the label-head of the taste-making 8Bit and Cécille imprints, Nick’s music is defining the new direction of the underground. We’re very excited and honored to welcome Nick to the Sullivan Room for the very first time on Saturday, September 25th.

It’s been a dizzying rise for Nick Curly, who made a huge global splash with a string of releases in 2008, and has been going non-stop ever since. Nick’s own productions helped revitalize and energize deep house music, adding enough techno punch to toughen things up for the bigger rooms. He emerged from his hometown of Mannheim, Germany, along with several other key producers – including Johnny D, Gorge, Marcus Fix and Andomat 3000 – a group which represented the so-called “Mannheim Sound”. But today Nick is truly recognized as a global innovator, with world-class DJs all supporting his labels and his productions.

It’s been a busy run for Nick this summer, which began with him mixing one of the discs for Sven Vath’s “Party Animals” Cocoon Ibiza CD. He continued to rock festivals and clubs across Europe, and was the resident headliner all summer long at Space Ibiza’s Kehakuma party. To add to his achievements, he made his Essential Mix debut on July 31st, playing for Pete Tong’s prestigious BBC Radio Show. Now out on a rare North American tour, Nick’s Sullivan Room set will be only his third New York DJ appearance, and his hypnotic, dub-flavored sound will sound perfect on the Sully sound system.

Joining Nick on the decks will be Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo, who played with Nick at his last New York appearance in October 2009. Curly is one of the featured artists on their dynamic Fall lineup at the Sullivan Room, which sees artists from across the electronic music spectrum hitting the club. Sullivan Room regulars and Global Frequencies’ DJs Samsara will be warming things up for Nick, with newcomer Simon Heyliger opening the party. This is a night for the underground to shine, with one of electronic music’s most exciting new talents showing New York City what his sound is all about.

It’s been a whirlwind summer of music in New York, but the seasons are beginning to change. The Fall is just about here, and this Saturday, September 11th, Sleepy & Boo return to the Sullivan Room to kick off their new season of Basic NYC Saturdays at the Sullivan Room. They’re getting everything going with the debut of the red-hot Vincenzo, a stalwart on the Poker Flat and Dessous labels, and one of the most sought-after producers in the international underground. He’s the first in a string of exciting artists who’ll be hitting the Sullivan Room this fall .

Vincenzo has been making scintillating, genre-crossing music for well over a decade now. He expertly blurs the lines between deep house and techno like few others, and has built a discography of dynamic sounds and classic records that have earned him the respect of a huge range of taste-making labels, DJs and music lovers. From his early work with Steve Bug’s deep-house minded Dessous imprint, to his tracks and remixes on Bug’s Poker Flat Recordings, Vincenzo’s music is all about quality and depth. He continues to broaden his reach as a producer, with tracks included on the recent “Hi Five mobilee!” and John Digweed’s massive “Structures” mix.

As a DJ, Vincenzo’s music is equally as forward-thinking as his productions, spanning a huge range of sounds and styles. But all of it is driven by a relentless dancefloor groove, anchored in the knowledge of how to take a crowd to the edge of revelry. With a seasoned resume of rocking parties worldwide, we’re excited to hear him drop his debut Basic NYC set.

Joining Vincenzo on the night will be Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo, who just returned from a two-week sojourn in Ibiza. While overseas they had the privilege of rocking two sets at the legendary Space nightclub, and upon their return they kicked off the Sunday School Grove tent at the Electric Zoo Festival. Their guests include Connie, the ReSolute resident who is also celebrating her Birthday at the party. She hasn’t played at the Sullivan Room in quite a while and we’re excited to have her for this special night. Warming things up will be Basic NYC regular Jordan Luckett, who’ll be setting things off with his own deep grooves. This is also the official afterparty for the first-ever Naughty Call Boat Party with headlining guest Brandon Moeller.

It’s been an amazing summer of outdoor party adventures for Basic NYC, and with the Fall arriving it’s almost time to bid farewell to one of our favorite venues: Water Taxi Beach Long Island City. Basic NYC has had the privilege of presenting some of our favorite artists at this stunning waterside location, and we’ve got one last bash of the summer this Sunday, September 12th, when we welcome the Chicago-born, west-coast based vocalist/DJ Colette back to New York.

Colette is one of the most unique artists in the house music world. As a performer, she is well known for fusing a live element into her sets, adding her own vocals to the tracks she expertly mixes. A songwriter and vocalist, Colette has released a number of acclaimed singles and albums through her affiliation with OM Records. During her live sets, she draws from her two solo LPs (“Hypnotized” and “Push”), and numerous memorable singles, to keep the dancefloor both moving and captivated with her performance.

For this tour, she’s celebrating the launch of her own brand-new record label Candy Talk. Set to feature her own music, alongside releases and remixes from artists incuyding the Lawnchair Generals, Chuck Love, Joshua Heath and Giano to name a few, Candy Talk is already earning attention from tastemaking house DJs from around the world who are supporting the new label.

Basic NYC has featured a wide variety of artists at their Long Island City summer events, with memorable events from Tom Middleton, Justin Martin and Derrick Carter as some of the Sunday highlights. In addition to Queens, they’ve been holding it down at Water Taxi’s South Street Seaport venue as well. The parties have featured Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo playing alongside the headlining guests and local openers. Joining them for this Sunday’s bash will be Mikey G, the Down Deep duo of Kevin Finn and Mike Prieto, and George Quest and Tiho from the United Freakz posse. In a summer full of great parties and music, Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo + friends at Cielo in July was one of the season’s standouts. With a packed dancefloor going off all night, Sleepy & Boo dropped a monster of a primetime set that sent many hands up in the air. And as August begins to wind down, we’re excited to close out the summer with another installment of the party at Cielo. This Friday, August 20th, the Basic NYC residents will be headlining the decks for the return of Sleepy & Boo + friends. Joining them in the DJ booth will be Basic NYC regulars Prawns & Bajaj, with newcomer Mike Murphy celebrating his birthday with his Cielo debut. Once again, Cielo is offering free entry for those who RSVP to Basic NYC’s guest list.

For over six years, Sleepy & Boo have been an integral part of New York’s electronic music and nightlife culture. They are the co-founders of Basic NYC, which has served as their platform for presenting international guest DJs in New York, with a long-running Saturday night residency at the Sullivan Room. The event was named New York’s “Best Dance Party” by New York magazine in 2009, and has featured a breathtaking range of DJs, covering the full spectrum of house and techno. As the residents, Sleepy & Boo are well known for setting the musical mood with their opening and closing sets, complimenting the headliners and adding their own musical twist to the night.

But Sleepy & Boo’s range as DJs extends far beyond their own residency. They are regularly asked to DJ at many of New York’s top nightclubs and electronic music events, and work closely with all the city’s leading production groups. They’ve dropped mesmerizing sets at events as diverse as the inaugural Electric Zoo Festival, the sold-out Terminal 5 deadmau5 appearance in November, Steve Lawler’s Water Taxi Beach debut, and will be bringing their sound to Ibiza’s legendary Space terrace on August 27th. From deep house to tough techno, Sleepy & Boo’s expansive, genre-crossing sets feature the best labels, sounds and producers creating the cutting-edge dance music of the moment.

Anyone who has ever seen Chicago’s house music maestro Derrick Carter live knows that he always leaves the dancefloor begging for more. It’s a common occurrence at any party that Derrick has just wrecked: a breathless, sweaty crowd, desperate to hear just one more encore, one more track to keep the party going. A Derrick Carter party is just so exhilarating, nobody ever wants it to end.

For Derrick’s next New York appearance, Basic NYC and the Dance.Here.Now crew are teaming up to make the party last a little bit longer. He’ll be playing two sets over this special weekend – a Saturday night throwdown at the Sullivan Room, and an outdoors sunset jam on Sunday evening at Water Taxi Beach Long Island City. It’s a very rare chance to catch one of dance music’s most iconic artists doing his thing in two dramatically different locales. And since Derrick is known for always bringing a bag full of surprises to the decks, we can’t wait to hear what he’s got in store for this jack-tastic weekend.

Mixing up a storm behind the decks, Derrick’s sets are anything but predictable. With his signature sound as his foundation – the bass-thumping, boompty-boompty beats teased together with notes of jazz, R&B and funk – Carter drops everything from disco to techno into the mix. Expertly blended together, his music captures everything great about house music and its Chicago roots. This will be his third appearance of 2010 at the Sullivan Room after two storming nights in January and March, and his first-ever visit to Water Taxi Beach.

A proud Windy City native, Derrick Carter is synonymous with that city’s storied house music history. He emerged in the mid-1990s on the strength of his DJing, finely–tuned from gigging in Chicago’s fiercely competitive club and warehouse party scene, and his early tracks and productions. His stripped-down, bass-heavy sound, mixed with a wiggly, shuffling rhythm, helped crystallize the jerky, “tracky” style of house that came to define the Chicago sound, while Derrick’s own UK-based label, Classic Music Company, launched him to international acclaim. He has released a string of legendary tracks and remixes, on labels as diverse as OM, Get Physical, NRK, and turned out mix CDs for Ministry of Sound, Azuli, and DMC.

Opening up for Derrick at the Sullivan Room will be Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo, who have had a jam-packed summer of parties and music. They’ve invited some of their best NYC DJ friends to join in on the weekend fun as well, with Oscar P, Chris Love and DBOW, Pete Schwinge, and Mickey Durivage all dropping records throughout. New York is most definitely in the house this Friday night at Pacha. It’s a night to celebrate this city’s homegrown talent, as the club features a stacked lineup of DJs who are all proud to represent the Big Apple. Headlining the festivities will be Cevin Fisher, the producer behind some of the city’s biggest clubland anthems over the years, and joining him in the booth is Basic NYC’s resident DJ duo Sleepy & Boo. With the Samsara duo warming up the main room, and Lola, Sean Cormac and host SILVERBULL from Stimulus Response in the basement all night, get ready for a night of cutting edge big room music, all delivered with plenty of New York City swagger.

Few producers have had such a successful track record as Cevin Fisher. Starting with his very first releases in the mid-90s, Cevin has always been one of house music’s go-to artists and DJs. He’s the man behind a string of legendary underground releases and remixes, from the spoken word classic “The Way We Used To” to the churning dancefloor mind-melter “The Freaks Come Out” and the tough, tribal stomp of Submission’s “Women Beat Their Men.” He’s a regular guest in the Pacha DJ booth, where his fusion of techno and house never fails to set the dancefloor off. He always brings serious energy and passion to his DJ sets, and he’s got plenty of new music to showcase at this primetime performance.

Basic NYC’s Sleepy & Boo are key players in New York’s electronic music scene, where they are often heard playing alongside some of the world’s most important DJs. They’ve held down Saturdays at the Sullivan Room for the last six-plus years, warming up the room or closing down the night for their international guests. And outside of the Sullivan Room, Sleepy & Boo are regularly heard wrecking the dancefloor at Cielo, Santos Party House and Water Taxi Beach. This summer alone, they’ve played with notable headliners including Steve Lawler, James Zabiela, Danny Howells and Paco Osuna. For Friday’s party, they’re Cevin’s special guests, and will be playing the main room before he finishes off the night.

Rounding out the lineup will be the Global Frequencies residents Samsara, the two brothers who just had the honor of setting up Desyn Masiello a few weeks back. They’ll be  warming up the main room with some deep tech-house to get the party started. Easily one of the regular highlights of Basic NYC’s event calendar is a night on the dancefloor with San Francisco’s house music maestro Mark Farina. For the last several years, Mark’s sets at the Sullivan Room have been a clinic in turntable virtuosity, with his trademark fusion of deep and chunky Chicago-laced house grooves setting the dancefloor off. On Saturday, August 7th, Mark will be making a mid-summer visit to the Sullivan Room for what promises to be another late night full of cutting edge music and outstanding DJing wizardy.

From his downtempo “Mushroom Jazz” selections, to his wildly influential house sets, Mark Farina has been spreading his love of underground music worldwide for years. A Chicago native who moved to San Francisco in the early 90s, Mark quickly became known as the city’s most important ambassador of the deep, jazzy house that came to define the west cost sound. Few DJs have influenced as many dancers, producers and DJs over the years, but Mark’s unique and uncompromising approach to music has made him an icon to his legions of fans. With his energetic mixing and cutting-edge track selection, Mark’s sets never fail to set the dancefloor on fire.

With dozens of mix CDs, his own artist album on OM Records, and numerous original productions and remixes, Mark’s music is widely known. But it’s his live appearances are where he is at his best: skillfully working EQs, layering acapellas over tracks, blending long-forgotten classics with today’s club gems. Each set is always a new experience, and each weekend he journeys around the globe to fire up dancefloors with his uncompromising crowd-pleasing music.

In recent months, Mark has been focusing on re-launching his Great Lakes Audio label. In the Spring, he dropped his own “Geograffiti EP”, a multi-track release of his own productions that was quickly hailed and supported by a wide range of DJs. With a fresh set of new remixes of “That’s How” just out, with Sonny Fedora, JT Donaldson and Ken ECB contributing mixes, Great Lakes Audio continues to deliver the good for the DJs and the dancefloor alike.

Opening up for Mark on this night will be guests Mikey G and John Dill, with newcomer DJ Theory getting the party started. Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo are on hand for this night as well, fresh off an energetic opening set for Miguel Migs last weekend. This will be Mark’s first Sullivan Room appearance since the sound has been upgraded, so we can’t wait to hear his thick basslines and crackling drums loud and clear.

Few DJs are as closely identified with their hometown as Miguel “Migs” and San Francisco. For well over a decade, Migs has been one of the defining artists of the unique Bay Area house music scene and sound. His blend of soulful vocals, live instrumentation, and just the right amount of dubby, percussive grooves has become his trademark, and he’s logged many, many miles spreading his vibes around the world. This Saturday, July 31st, Migs is returning to New York for another extended set on the Sullivan Room decks for Basic NYC. This will be his third Sullivan Room appearance, and after a memorable night in March, we’re excited to hear what this innovator has in store for us on his return trip.

When the Naked Music label rose to prominence in the late ‘90s, Miguel Migs was right there with it. As one of the key contributors to the label’s fame – as a producer, a remixer, and DJ – Miguel established himself as one of the leading lights of American deep house scene. In recent years, he’s been more closely associated with Salted Music, his very own imprint he launched in 2004. Salted has evolved into a house music powerhouse, releasing both dancefloor bombs and artist albums alike, exposing DJs and clubbers to new production talent from around the world. Migs’ most recent CD mix for the label – “Get Salted Vol. 2” – is a smooth representation of Migs’ revered DJ sets, as he seamlessly weaves between deep house and  chunky grooves,  with loads of lush, musical productions. Longtime collaborators like Jay-J, Fred Everything and Lisa Shaw are all featured on the release, alongside Salted faves Nathan G, Joshua Heath and Dutchian Soul.

Miguel’s life is all about music. Aside from his packed DJing schedule, his other projects includes his live band Petalpusher. This eight-piece live band, which Miguel launched in 2007, has toured worldwide and released the celebrated Salted album “Those Things.” Petalpusher is a continuation of Miguel’s roots: before his love affair with house music, Miguel was a songwriter and guitarist for Zion Sounds, a Santa Cruz dub reggae band. He typically plays the instruments lives on his own productions, equally skilled with keyboards, bass and guitars.

Opening for Miguel will be Basic NYC’s residents Sleepy & Boo, who have had a jam-packed summer of DJ appearances and events. From Sullivan Room to Water Taxi Beach to Cielo, they’ve been hosting parties and dropping plenty of memorable sets, and on this night they will be setting the stage for Miguel with their own set of deep and hypnotic house grooves,. Getting the party started will be Michael Vieira, who is returning to Basic NYC for his third Sullivan Room appearance. This Sunday, August 1st, Sleepy & Boo are shining the spotlight on New York’s local and up-and-coming DJ talent as they bring their “Sleepy & Boo + friends” party down to the Water Taxi Beach South Street Seaport for a day-to-night event. Basic NYC’s residents Sleepy & Boo will be playing a special sunset set, along with a stacked lineup of some of their favorite DJ collaborators. Underground music goes outdoors at one of New York’s most unique summertime spots.

It’s been a busy summer for Sleepy & Boo, with the duo relentlessly rocking dancefloors all over town week in and week out. For their next Sunday party, Sleepy & Boo will be hosting the legendary Derrick Carter as they return to Water Taxi Beach Long Island City. With Derrick playing at the Sullivan Room on Saturday night, and then heading over to the beach on Sunday, that’s certainly going to be one of the summer’s house music highlights.

Dance music and club culture is all about the latest tastes and trends, but there’s something about hearing one of the original creators live that makes for an unforgettable experience. That’s what happened when the “Godfather of House” Frankie Knuckles hit Sullivan Room in February, as he made his venue debut with a truly memorable night of his signature soulful and uplifting house music. Now we’re honored to welcome this legend back to Basic NYC on Saturday, July 24th, when Frankie returns to New York for another intimate dancefloor session. With Sullivan Room’s recent sound system upgrades adding to the vibe, we can’t wait to hear what Frankie has in store for us.

Music is Frankie’s life, and he has been devoted to dance music for over 30 years. His list of achievements and successes is long, but perhaps his most important contribution to this culture was his residency at Chicago’s Warehouse nightclub in the late 70s. Frankie, who came to Chicago from his native New York (where he played alongside Larry Levan at the Continental Baths), developed a powerful connection with the Warehouse crowd through the music he was playing. Alongside contemporary R&B and disco music, Frankie played his own re-edits and reel-to-reel rhythm tracks. Emphasizing the drums, and amplified on the Warehouse’s powerful sound system, Frankie’s music gave birth to a new form and a new term came to describe it: “house” music, the shorthand name for the club itself.

It’s been a magical ride for Frankie ever since those days. He’s become one of house music’s most beloved global ambassadors, sharing his spirit at clubs and festivals around the world on a weekly basis. He continues to have a thriving and very successful production career, having crafted some of the most enduring house anthems to date. He co-founded New York’s Def Mix production group, and in 1997, he won a Grammy Award for Best Remixer, Non-Classical.  He had a street in Chicago named after him in 2004, at a ceremony presided over by then Illinois State Senator Barack Obama. In 2008, he earned a whole new audience based on the strength of his stunning remix of “Blind” by the contemporary disco group Hercules and Love Affair

Joining Frankie on the night will be another key figue in the house music community: Eric Kupper. Himself a two-time Grammy Award winner. Kupper’s classic tracks and remixes, for both underground and pop artists alike, have won him accolades throughout the industry. Basic NYC Brings the House Hero to South Street Seaport on Sunday July 25th

This Sunday, July 25th, Basic NYC is excited to bring one of New York’s most beloved and respected DJs Tedd Patterson down to the Water Taxi Beach South Street Seaport for their next Sunday daytime bash. Tedd is a “DJs DJ”, an artist who is strictly about playing and producing good music, and we’re excited to feature him at a Basic NYC event for the very first time. The Sunday party starts at 2:30pm and runs late into the night, offering revelers the ideal location to soak in the sun, enjoy some great food and drinks, and get down to some great beats from Tedd himself.

Tedd has had a long career as both a DJ and an music industry veteran, contributing to dance culture in all of its many facets. From A&R stints at seminal labels like Emotive and Liquid Groove, to guest spots at top international venues, to his long-running Vibal monthly at Cielo, Tedd has earned himself the respect and admiration of both his peers and his legions of dedicated dancefloor fans. Open minded in his approach behind the decks, Tedd likes taking risks and mixing and matching different sounds and styles. “I like the soul that exists in a variety of musical forms,” he says. “I’m not afraid to take a chance and that has become my signature, and that works for me.”

From the studio, Tedd’s music has been featured on a huge range of cutting edge imprints and labels. With releases on Radio Slave’s renowned Rekids, the German tech heavyweight Conaisseur, Chus & Ceballos’ Stereo Productions and  Francois K’s Wave Music to name just a few, Tedd’s music crosses multiple genres, styles and sounds, loaded with his trademarked Big Apple attitude and flavor. His tracks can’t simply be classified under one easy description – rather he makes dancefloor music that’s heavy on the groove, and never relies on easy clichés. Right now, he’s creating a stir with his brand-new remixes of Charles Webster’s classic “Soothe” – which is listed at #5 on the top singles chart at Traxsource.com right now (and it still hasn’t seen a full release yet.)

Basic NYC’s has hosted a number of diverse Water Taxi Beach parties this summer, utilizing both the South Street Seaport and Long Island City venues for their showcases. So far, they’ve hosted OM Records’ deep house maestro Fred Everything, the SAW Recordings duo of Hector Romero and Satoshi Tomiie, dirtybird’s Justin Martin, and the UK’s “Jedi” Tom Middleton to name a few. Joining Tedd on the decks for this installment will be the Stimulus Response DJs Lola and Sean Cormac; Jack Productions’ own Todd Fatjo; and the Love Sound Project DJs featuring Chris Love, DBOW and more, who have been holding it down at SOUP on Friday nights. Basic NYC’s resident DJs Sleepy & Boo have played plenty of memorable sets at Cielo over the last few years, but their next night at the acclaimed nightspot should certainly be a special one. On Friday, July 16th, Cielo is hosting the duo for their first-ever headlining appearance at the venue, as Sleepy & Boo bring their arsenal of cutting-edge sounds to the club’s intimate dancefloor. This will be a night that recognizes New York’s own local talent, and playing the opening sets will be regular Basic NYC guests Mikey G, and Prawns and Bajaj, all making their Cielo debut. And to add the merriment, we’ll be celebrating Sleepy’s birthday on Friday – and offering free entry before 12 – making this party a truly festive night of music.

For over six years, Sleepy & Boo have been an integral part of New York’s electronic music and nightlife culture. They are the co-founders of Basic NYC, which has served as their platform for presenting international guest DJs in New York, with a long-running Saturday night residency at the Sullivan Room. The event was named New York’s “Best Dance Party” by New York magazine in 2009, and has featured a breathtaking range of DJs, covering the full spectrum of house and techno. As the residents, Sleepy & Boo are well known for setting the musical mood with their opening and closing sets, complimenting the headliners and adding their own musical twist to the night.

But Sleepy & Boo’s range as DJs extends far beyond their own residency. They are regularly asked to DJ at many of New York’s top nightclubs and electronic music events, and work closely with all the city’s leading production groups. They’ve dropped mesmerizing sets at events as diverse as the inaugural Electric Zoo Festival, the sold-out Terminal 5 deadmau5 appearance in November, Steve Lawler’s Water Taxi Beach debut, and will be bringing their sound to Ibiza’s legendary Space terrace this August. From deep house to tough techno, Sleepy & Boo’s expansive, genre-crossing sets feature the best labels, sounds and producers creating the cutting-edge dance music of the moment.

When OM Records launched their new “OM Masters” mix CD series, there couldn’t be a better choice to mix the first installment than the deep house veteran FRED EVERYTHING. Fred is known worldwide for one thing – making and playing outstanding music. He truly is a master both behind the decks and in the studio, and we’re excited to welcome this visionary artist back to New York for two back-to-back events. On Saturday July 17th, Fred will be headlining Basic NYC at Sullivan Room, and on Sunday July 18th Basic is bringing Fred down to the Water Taxi Beach South Street Seaport for an all-day and evening waterfront fiesta. Get ready for two diverse sets of lush, soulful music from one of the best in the scene.

“OM Masters” does a fantastic job of showcasing Fred’s many and diverse musical talents .As a DJ, Fred seamlessly weaves together the CD’s 14 tracks, creating the type of atmosphere that can be heard in his DJ sets. Deep house, midtempo disco, tracky and jazzy productions: all these sounds come together when Fred is in the mix. His own productions are in the spotlight throughout the mix, with practically every track a Fred Everything remix, original or collaboration. It’s a testament to Fred’s dedication to his craft.

Fred has a long history of working closely with OM Records. His last artist album – the acclaimed “Lost Together”- was released on OM in 2008, and he mixed his own “House of OM” compilation in 2005. Along the way he’s had numerous singles and remixes released on OM. In addition, Fred’s own Lazy Days Recordings has been one of the underground’s standout labels, releasing nothing but standout singles from a huge array of artists. Shur-I-Kan, Trentemoller, Lovebirds, Kruse & Nuernberg and Fred Everything himself have all added their touch to some of the Lazy Days releases.

It’s been a little bit since Fred was last in New York, so for this visit he’s getting the opportunity to really show what his DJing is all about. Saturday will feature Fred dropping a primetime headlining set at the Sullivan Room, one of the very first venues Fred ever played in New York. On Sunday, Fred will be dropping a more laid back, daytime set as we take the party to the gorgeous Water Taxi Beach South Street Seaport. This will be an excellent chance to hear one of electronic music’s most accomplished artist in the ideal settings.

Joining Fred for these events will be Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo, who have presented multiple Sullivan Room and Water Taxi jams throughout this summer. There willl be plenty of NYC’s talented locals along for the ride as well, with Anthony Velarde, and DBOW and Chris Love highlighting Sullivan Room. Down Deep, Chuck Acquisto and the Mixer Assassin duo are all on the lineup at Water Taxi Beach on Sunday. Let’s go deep for two special days of music with Fred Everything.

All the kudos for this project go to our amazing friend Mitch Wells, who is one of the world’s true renaissance men. Go and see for yourself. Mitch is an artist, a designer, a DJ, a producer, a musician, an inventor, a t-shirt maker – just an all-around creative mind who is always willing to lend his services.

In fact, you’ve already seen Mitch’s work before: he designed our Basic logo when we first started throwing our shindigs a few years back. So it’s only natural that he brings our web presence up to par with the rest of the cyber world with this new site.

We love music, we love presenting DJs to you, we love having a good party. And the idea behind the site is tie all of that together. It’s an event recognized for its diversity, with partygoers treated to a huge range of talent and sounds (everyone from deep house veterans to the newest names in techno have been guests). Named as New York’s “Best Dance Party 2009” by New York Magazine, Basic NYC has become an international destination for clubbers eager to catch world-class DJs in top-notch spaces, taking place at some of New York’s finest venues. But it’s not just about out-of-town guests – for over two and a half years, Sleepy & Boo headlined their own monthly Sleepy & Boo + Friends residency, which featured them playing extended headlining sets alongside friends and guests from New York. And in the Fall of 2012, Basic NYC staged a series of underground loft parties that featured an array of techno and tech-house DJs playing well into the morning, creating an infectious old-school warehouse vibe with top-notch production – crystal clear sound, visuals and decor.

In 2013, Sleepy & Boo began an important new partnership with the completely revamped Marquee New York, joining the club as Friday resident DJs and programming the talent for the night. They’ve added a new dimension to the club by bringing in some of the world’s best underground DJs, welcoming a huge array of veteran and newcomers alike to the club’s Funktion One-equipped DJ booth. Their Friday event has become one of New York’s most important and talked-about nights, presenting cutting edge music week in and week out at one of the city’s top venues – with Marquee’s pristine sound system, lights and visual design the perfect platform to showcase these artists. They closed 2013 in stunning fashion with a nine-week guest residency from Marco Carola and his Music On crew at Marquee, the first of its kind in the United States.

Apart from their own events, the duo is consistently DJing at some of the best parties, venues and festivals around the world. They’ve performed at three editions of the renowed Electric Zoo Festival; the inaugural Electric Daisy Carnival New York, the Dance.Here.Now. festival at Governor’s Island; performed at some of LiveNations’ massive Roseland events, and have rocked dancefloors around the world in England, Germany, Canada, Japan and Spain (including sets at Ibiza’s legendary Space, Amnesia and Pacha clubs). In 2013, they were guests at Luciano’s legendary Vagabundos party at Booom in Ibiza, and joined him at Cipriani’s for a memorable Halloween event. They were hand-picked by Kaskade to support him on his groundbreaking Redux tour in April, and appeared at Lavo Las Vegas during the club’s EDC 2013 run of underground after-hours events. They’ve also been nominated several times for the prestigious DJ Times America’s Best DJ poll.
